Our Injustice: Gods Among Us Review

Injustice: Gods Among Us Review

Superman was tricked by the Joker in destroying Metropolis and killing Lois Lane. He has gone crazy and, after killing the Joker, established a new world order, comprising of some other superheroes and villains, which seeks to rule people through fear.

The Insurgency, led by none other than Batman, has found an alternate universe where Joker’s plan has not quite worked out, and seeks the help of the superheroes from that world to help protect this world.

Injustice: Gods Among Us pits all your favourite characters from the DC universe against each other, at times against themselves, in this fast paced fighting game. Injustice is, at it’s very core, an alternative version of Mortal Kombat, with superheroes.

Developed by NetherRealm, the same studio behind the last version of Mortal Kombat, it builds upon the inherent strength of the fighting genre and takes it into a whole new level. There’s even a Scorpion DLC that had a crossover with the game.

Unlike most games of the genre, Injustice gives you the player numerous tutorials and practice levels to get you acquainted with the different powers of each character. All the action is done with a combination of four keys. Three different attack keys and a ‘special’ key which activates an attack specific to each character.

The game has two separate sets of characters. The ones who rely on power, like superman, and the ones who use gadgets and other external items, like Batman.

Even though the action takes place in a two-dimensional plane, the characters and the background are three-dimensional. Because of that, different aspects of the environment, can be used during the action. You can use a parked car do deflect a laser onto your opponent, or knock them head first into a statue.

Depending on your character, you might need to use the environment as well as various attack combos to win. The special attack is enabled after filling a fairly long energy meter through the usage of various combo moves.

The meter is divided into sections, and the completion of each segment triggers an attack upgrade or a change in style, like Wonder Woman switching from a sword to a lasso.

The story mode is quite lengthy and you get to play different characters as the game progresses. This removes the monotony of playing the same person throughout the single player campaign in the Mortal Kombat games. The game offers other modes as well, including one where you get to do various missions depending on the character you choose.

There’s also an online multiplayer mode where you can challenge your friends to a good old fashioned 1v1 fight. Graphically, the game is slightly on the darker side, without bright colours and the characters getting more realistic costumes.

Otherwise, it’s pretty dated with everyone looking plain with pretty poor facial animation. However, the fight scenes, and especially the super attacks do look extremely good. One of the most stand out features of the game is the voice acting, with everyone being voiced by the same people who voiced the actual cartoon characters.

Overall, Injustice: Gods Among Us is a classic fighting game, which pretty much fulfills all that it promises. It has a pretty simple combat system which is good for beginners, but might not challenge the pros. Even with it’s flaws, it’s a great game for lovers of the genre and the DC Universe.

For our review on the game, we’re going to give Injustice: Gods Among Us a Rating: 7.5 out of 10 overall.
