Dead Rising Rises Again: Capcom Unveils Deluxe Remaster

In an unexpected move that’s sure to excite fans of zombie-slaying mayhem, Capcom has announced a Deluxe Remaster of their cult classic, Dead Rising.

The original game, which first shambled onto the Xbox 360 in 2006, is set to receive a significant makeover for what Capcom cryptically refers to as the “newest generation of platforms”.

The announcement came via a short 47-second teaser trailer that has left fans salivating for more.

While details remain scarce, the footage suggests this may be more than a simple touch-up. The visuals appear to have undergone a substantial overhaul, leading some to speculate whether this is a remaster or a full-fledged remake.

Dead Rising, the brainchild of Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune, took the zombie apocalypse to a uniquely ridiculous level.

Set in the sprawling Willamette Parkview Mall in Colorado, the game cast players as photojournalist Frank West, tasked with uncovering the truth behind the outbreak while surviving for three in-game days.

What set Dead Rising apart was its anything-goes approach to combat. The mall became a veritable playground of improvised weaponry, allowing players to dispatch the undead with everything from traditional firearms to more unconventional items like mailboxes, lawn mowers, and even a Servbot mask from Mega Man Legends.

This creative freedom, combined with the ability to dress Frank in outlandish outfits, resulted in some of gaming’s most memorable and hilarious moments.

If it was likened to any competitor in its niche, fans would compare it to the Dead Island franchise.

The original Dead Rising was praised for its innovative gameplay and dark humour, but also criticised for its punishing save system and time limit.

It will be interesting to see if Capcom addresses these aspects in the remaster, potentially making the game more accessible to modern audiences while retaining its unique charm.

As for which platforms will host this undead reunion, Capcom is keeping quiet on that front. However, given the “newest generation” statement, it’s reasonable to assume we’ll see Frank West shambling onto PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

The release date remains equally mysterious, with Capcom simply advising fans to “stay tuned for more info soon”.

Given that a teaser trailer has just been unveiled, its no surprise that a launch date hasn’t been set to be honest.

Once a proper gameplay trailer is released, then we can expect to see a concrete release schedule dated by the developers.

This announcement comes at a time when the survival horror genre is experiencing a renaissance, with successful remakes of Resident Evil games and Silent Hill, whilst new entries like Dead Space have garnered critical acclaim.

The Dead Rising series itself has been dormant since 2016’s Dead Rising 4, making this remaster a potential testing ground for renewed interest in the franchise.

For longtime fans, this remaster offers a chance to relive the chaos of Willamette Mall with improved graphics and potentially refined gameplay.

For newcomers, it’s an opportunity to experience a game that helped define the zombie genre in gaming, blending horror and humour in a way that few titles have managed since.

As we await further details, one thing is certain: the zombies of Dead Rising are coming back, and they’ve never looked better.

It might be time to start practising your golf swing and perfecting your aim with household objects.

After all, in this undead title, anything can be a weapon, and soon we’ll all have another chance to prove it.
