Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 Remake launched on 24 March 2023 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam.
The game reimagines the original Resident Evil 4, first released in 2005, with modernised combat, redesigned environments and new gameplay systems. Capcom developed the remake using its RE Engine, the same technology used for several of the company’s modern Resident Evil games.
Capcom also released the game’s launch trailer, showing Leon S. Kennedy fighting his way through the Village, Castle and other reworked locations from the original game.
Resident Evil 4 takes place six years after the biological disaster in Raccoon City. Leon, now working as a US government agent, is sent to locate and rescue Ashley Graham, the kidnapped daughter of the US president.
His search takes him to a secluded European village where the local population has been infected by Las Plagas.
One of the biggest mechanical changes is Leon’s expanded use of the combat knife. It can be used defensively to parry enemy attacks, including attacks that could not be countered this way in the original game.
The remake also introduced new systems and optional activities, including Merchant Requests, an expanded Attaché Case system and redesigned Shooting Range challenges.
Resident Evil 4 later received additional content following its March 2023 launch, including the Separate Ways campaign starring Ada Wong and a free PlayStation VR2 mode for the PS5 version.
