Key Highlights:

  • Tekken 8 adding in-game shop feature with microtransactions
  • Announcement divides fans on merits of additional purchases
  • Follows backlash to monetisation in SF6 and Mortal Kombat
  • Players willing to spend reasonably on cosmetics and skins

The newly released fighting game Tekken 8 has revealed plans to incorporate a digital shop featuring additional content players can purchase with real-world money. An in-game message notified fans of the upcoming “Tekken Shop” arrival, sparking mixed reactions regarding the introduction of microtransactions.

While details remain scarce, the shop will likely focus on selling cosmetic items and skins for customisable characters. However, the announcement changing the game’s ESRB rating to reflect “In-Game Purchases” signals actual funds will be required rather than existing currencies.

Recent Backlash in Genre

The topic of monetisation has been controversial for the fighting game genre lately. Last year’s Street Fighter 6 endured criticism for high pricing on its alternate DLC costumes. Mortal Kombat 1 also faced backlash over selling limited-time Fatalities.

As a result, Tekken 8 adding post-launch microtransactions has divided fans on whether this signals a positive or worrying development. Some series devotees decry the practice outright. But others don’t mind spending reasonably on cosmetics to support extended development.

Goodwill from Strong Launch

Tekken 8 only launched last month but has already exceeded Bandai Namco’s commercial expectations thanks to rave reviews lauding its story mode and gameplay changes. This early success arguably grants the developers leeway with fans.

However, taking things too far monetisation-wise risks squandering recently earned goodwill. Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter serve as cautionary examples of player resentment overpricing popular features. The newly released Beat ’em up will need to tread carefully as details emerge.

Veteran Fighter Passes Available

On the DLC front, the first Tekken 8 post-launch character is veteran Capoeira expert Eddy Gordo. The existing Season Pass also grants the first two yet-to-be-revealed fighters.

If the Tekken Shop focuses solely on optional cosmetics, while new characters stay confined to the traditional Fighter Pass model, backlash could remain minimal. But trying to double dip with paid skins and characters may overwhelm consumers.

Ongoing Live Service Model

The addition of microtransactions hints at the Beat ’em up shifting towards a live service framework, with Bandai Namco leveraging continuous content updates to generate revenue long-term. Upfront sales alone likely cannot sustain extended support.

Assuming the pricing stays reasonable compared to other fighting franchises, the latest entry may avoid the same fan criticism plaguing genre cousins Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat for their monetary practices. But players will surely keep close watch on what the new Shop offers upon release.
