In the grim realm of dark fantasy, one beacon shines defiantly – the warm glow of Candle Knight! This spellbinding new metroidvania adventure which is developed by Dracma Studios has finally made its way to Xbox and PlayStation, inviting gamers on a quest to illuminate the shadows.

For just £10.49, you can download Candle Knight and embark on an epic 2.5D platforming journey. The game has previously been available on PC/Steam, but now makes its long awaited console debut.

Taking control of a valiant candle-wielding knight, you’ll battle menacing creatures, navigate tricky terrain, and solve mind-bending puzzles, all while aided by a dynamic difficulty system that adjusts the challenge to your skills.

From the moment Candle Knight begins, you’ll be enveloped in a mesmerising world of stunning visuals and an epic musical score.

Each foreboding corridor of the ruined castle is meticulously crafted, casting dramatic shadows that make your heroic candle’s flame all the more vital.

But the true magic lies in the gameplay itself. As you progress, you’ll unlock new abilities like devastating sword strikes, defensive shields, and even projectile attacks.

The above trailer showcases the gaining of the dash ability, which is unlocked in later levels.

Strategically balancing these powers is crucial, as your “ignition” level increases with each offensive action, amplifying both your strength and vulnerability.

A Flickering Journey

While the platformer excels in atmosphere and concept, some rougher edges tarnish its brilliant sheen.

Controls can feel clunky at times, particularly when executing precise jumps or wall-climbing maneuvers.

Boss battles, though visually striking, occasionally lack the polish and cohesion to feel truly epic.

Additionally, performance hiccups and optimisation issues may leave more powerful gaming rigs sputtering, even as the game runs smoothly on handheld devices like the Steam Deck.

These issues, coupled with the occasional level design oversight or missing reward, suggest Candle Knight could benefit from a few more embers of refinement.

Perhaps patches/updates down the line will address these issues.

Still, for all its minor flaws, Candle Knight shines as a captivating and unique experience. Its gorgeous dark fantasy world, clever gameplay mechanics, and mesmerising presentation make it a beacon of hope for fans of the metroidvania genre.

If it was to be compared to another title, it definitely has some strong Little Nightmares vibes about it and if it can replicate half the success of that franchise, then it’s in for a bright future ahead.

As this plucky little flame continues to burn brightly on Xbox and PlayStation, one can’t help but be drawn to its warmth, eager to face the challenges that lurk in the shadows.

While it may not be a perfect masterpiece just yet, the title’s potential to ignite the imaginations of gamers is undeniably radiant.
