The latest entry in the long-running hack-and-slash series is targeting a 2025 release for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, promising to push the boundaries of what players expect from a Dynasty Warriors game.

Players will navigate a 3D world map, choosing battles to join, visiting shops, and interacting with characters. This design choice aims to strike a balance between the series’ traditional structure and modern gaming sensibilities.

One of the most significant revelations was from the recent ChinaJoy 2024 event, where a gameplay presentation showcased the introduction of character switching. While players begin as a nameless, amnesiac protagonist, they’ll have the ability to take control of iconic figures from the Three Kingdoms period.

The footage showcased a seamless transition from the main character to a young Guan Yu, a legendary warrior familiar to series veterans.

Koei Tecmo boasts that Dynasty Warriors: Origins will feature the largest number of on-screen soldiers in the franchise’s history. The gameplay footage and screenshots released so far certainly support this claim, showcasing battlefields teeming with combatants.

This increased scale promises to deliver the epic, over-the-top action that has become synonymous with the Dynasty Warriors name. The game’s story begins before the Yellow Turban Rebellion, the historical event that kicked off the Three Kingdoms period.
