This revival of the beloved supernatural action-puzzle franchise coincides with its 25th anniversary, offering players a chance to relive the gothic adventures of Raziel with enhanced visuals.

Crystal Dynamics, the original creators, have partnered with Aspyr Media to bring these classic titles back to life.

The remastered collection will feature both games bundled together, allowing players to toggle between original and remastered graphics, catering to both nostalgia and modern visual expectations.

This feature is similar to what fans experienced in remasters like Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

The remaster promises enhanced character models, revamped textures, and improved effects, while maintaining the core gameplay that made the series a cult favourite.

Players will once again navigate Raziel, a vengeful vampire wraith, through the dark fantasy world of Nosgoth, switching between the physical and spectral realms to solve puzzles and defeat enemies.

Originally released for the PlayStation and PC in 1999, with a Dreamcast port following in 2000, the Soul Reaver games blended elements of actionpuzzle-solving, and exploration.

The series was noted for its Lovecraftian themes and the iconic Soul Reaver sword, which manifests as an ethereal blade on Raziel’s arm during combat.

It was one of the earliest examples of video games embracing complex storytelling. Soul Reaver was also a technical marvel of its time, using a seamless data streaming system that allowed for large, uninterrupted environments – a groundbreaking feature in the late ’90s

While the State of Play trailer only confirmed PS4 and PS5 versions, it was later confirmed the remaster will launch on multiple platforms, including XboxNintendo Switch, and PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store). This multi-platform approach aligns with the original games’ release strategy.

Fans will be pleased to note that the remasters will support 4K resolution on PS5, Xbox Series X, and high-end PCs, making it the most visually stunning version of the game ever made.

The December 10th, 2024 release date gives fans ample time to prepare for their return to Nosgoth. However, some observers have expressed caution, citing Aspyr’s mixed track record with remasters of classic games like Star Wars: KOTOR II and Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection.

The latter was a huge disappointment and ended up getting horrific reviews from almost all gaming outlets.

Despite these concerns, the announcement has generated significant excitement within the gaming community.

This is due to Crystal Dynamics’ involvement being the key. The studio has a deep understanding of the source material, having developed the original games, and their recent experience with remastering classic titles like the Tomb Raider: I-III Remastered Collection should prove beneficial.

The Legacy of Kain series has long been considered a forgotten gem, and this remaster offers both longtime fans and newcomers the opportunity to experience these influential titles with modern enhancements.

In an age of reboots, it’s no surprise that this franchise has come out of the darkness for its 25th anniversary.

Interestingly, this is not the first time the Legacy of Kain franchise has been linked with potential revivals. In 2013, a project known as Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun was in development but ultimately cancelled by Square Enix.

This announcement, therefore, brings new life to a franchise that fans feared might never return.
