Key Highlights:

  • Hideo Kojima teases new Death Stranding 2: On The Beach footage, hinting at a potential upcoming trailer.
  • The game has been officially rated in South Korea.
  • Speculation points to a PlayStation State of Play event, where a new trailer and potential release date could be revealed.

Hideo Kojima has once again fuelled anticipation for Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, offering fans a brief but intriguing look at the upcoming sequel.

The legendary developer shared a 20-second clip featuring Norman Reedus’ Sam and Léa Seydoux’s Fragile, expanding on a previously showcased scene from the January 2024 State of Play trailer.

The footage, presented off-screen, was accompanied by a message indicating its connection to the game’s final sound mixing process.

Given Kojima’s history of using cryptic marketing strategies, this teaser has sparked widespread speculation that a full-fledged trailer could be imminent.

A crucial development further intensifying the buzz around Death Stranding 2 is its recent classification by the South Korean ratings board.

The rating cites strong violence, vulgar language, and explicit drug use, aligning with the mature themes Kojima Productions is known for.

While ratings do not confirm an exact launch date, they typically indicate that a game is in the final stages of development.

This aligns with the growing expectation that Kojima will soon unveil a definitive release window.

Hideo Kojima’s editing process has long been an integral part of his storytelling, with the director personally overseeing the majority of his game trailers.

His latest social media activity, which included an image of an Adobe Premiere Pro timeline, suggests that he is deep in the process of finalising a new showcase for Death Stranding 2.

PlayStation State of Play Expectations

This timing coincides with mounting reports of an impending PlayStation State of Play event in February 2025.

Industry insider ‘NatetheHate’ has hinted at a broadcast later this month, and given previous Sony presentations, a fresh look at Kojima’s sequel seems increasingly likely.

Kojima’s penchant for weaving intricate narratives extends beyond Death Stranding 2’s plot and into its marketing strategy.

The upcoming sequel introduces an array of enigmatic new characters, including Elle Fanning’s Tomorrow, Shioli Kutsuna’s Rainy, and the unsettling Dollman, played by Fatih Akin.

At the same time, familiar faces like Conan O’Brien—who portrayed a quirky NPC in the original Death Stranding—are making their return.

O’Brien’s involvement has led to speculation that the beloved Sea Otter Hood, which allowed Sam to navigate water with ease, could also be making a comeback.

The PlayStation State of Play format has previously served as a major platform for Death Stranding-related reveals.

January 2024’s showcase delivered an in-depth look at the sequel alongside other major titles, while previous editions have highlighted games like Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, and Resident Evil 4.

If Sony’s February event follows suit, Death Stranding 2 could take centre stage once again, potentially revealing long-awaited gameplay details, new narrative elements, or even a concrete release date.

As speculation continues to mount, one thing is certain—Hideo Kojima remains a master of anticipation, crafting not only immersive game worlds but also elaborate build-ups that keep fans on the edge of their seats.
