The Grounded 2 PS5 release date has been confirmed for 11 August, when Obsidian Entertainment’s open-world survival-crafting sequel will expand beyond Xbox and PC. The PlayStation 5 version launches on the same day as Into the Abyss, a major content update that significantly expands Brookhollow Park.
Grounded 2 launched in Early Access on Xbox and PC in 2025, with the game also available through Xbox Game Pass. Obsidian has continued developing the sequel with co-development support from Eidos-Montréal, using community feedback to shape new features, balance changes, and additional content.
The move to PS5 represents another major milestone for the sequel. The original Grounded did not reach PlayStation 5 until 2024, two years after its full 1.0 release. Grounded 2 is therefore reaching PlayStation players much earlier in its development cycle while it remains in Early Access.
Game director Chris Parker described the upcoming PS5 release as effectively a “second launch” for the development team. Parker also explained that, from a developer’s perspective, he wants as many people as possible to experience the game on their preferred platform.
That wider availability comes with a substantial expansion. Into the Abyss introduces the Pond to Brookhollow Park and adds multiple new biomes to the survival sandbox. Players will be able to explore new locations, including the Mountains and Bayou, while venturing beneath the water to discover previously inaccessible areas.
Swimming also returns as a major gameplay system. New diving equipment allows players to remain underwater for longer periods, opening deeper sections of the Pond and creating new progression opportunities. The underwater ecosystem brings back familiar creatures from the original Grounded, including the koi fish and diving bell spider, alongside new threats.
Obsidian has built the Pond using lessons learned from the first game’s underwater environments. Into the Abyss expands that concept with more activities beneath the surface and a larger selection of areas to explore.
The update also introduces the Toe-biter, a new amphibious Buggy capable of travelling across land and water. Its dual-purpose movement gives players a faster way to navigate the expanded environment and reach locations surrounding the Pond.
Into the Abyss is set to be Grounded 2’s largest content update since its Early Access launch. Parker confirmed that the update is bigger than the previous Toxic Tangle expansion, with the Pond, multiple biomes, swimming mechanics, and the new Buggy forming part of the package arriving on 11 August.
Grounded 2 has already established a strong audience ahead of its PlayStation debut. The game currently holds an 87% Very Positive user rating on Steam, with much of the positive reception focused on its expanded survival systems and evolution of the original Grounded formula. Some player criticism has centred on technical problems and content still missing during Early Access.
The PS5 launch should significantly expand the game’s community at a key point in its development. Obsidian has indicated that it has further ideas for the Grounded 2 roadmap, although the studio’s immediate focus remains delivering Into the Abyss and bringing the game to PlayStation 5.
With both releases arriving simultaneously, 11 August will effectively serve as a fresh starting point for Grounded 2. Existing Xbox and PC players will receive the game’s biggest expansion to date, while an entirely new PlayStation audience will enter Brookhollow Park for the first time.
