Fareidolia is officially the name of Nexon’s mysterious Project RX, with today’s reveal finally giving players a clearer idea of what life inside its anime-inspired world will involve.
Developed by RX Studio under Nexon Games’ IO Division, the team behind Blue Archive, Fareidolia is an Unreal Engine 5 title built around immersive storytelling, character relationships, lifestyle activities and dynamic combat.
The project was originally announced under the Project RX codename in October 2024. A teaser released in December 2025 focused heavily on quieter everyday moments, showing characters cooking, reading and spending time together before briefly revealing more action-focused abilities towards the end.
Today’s announcement goes considerably further by introducing Anima City and explaining the player’s place within it.
Anima City exists in a world that closely resembles Earth while remaining noticeably different. Players become director of the Anima City Restoration Center and also take responsibility for Tasogare Hall, the centre’s office and a place they will share with girls possessing unusual abilities known as Mates.
Rather than simply watching those characters from a distance, Fareidolia appears particularly interested in making players feel as though they actually live alongside them while dealing with problems occurring throughout the city.
That mixture is what catches my attention most. Character-focused games can easily tell players that relationships matter, but building ordinary shared moments into the world alongside larger problems and combat could make those relationships feel earned rather than existing purely between missions.
Nexon has now introduced four characters who will help establish that dynamic.
Minieh is an explorer whose normally relaxed personality disappears when the possibility of an adventure emerges. Ohana is a mysterious, self-proclaimed genius who seemingly prefers using her considerable talents for mischief, while cat-eared Shami is permanently short of money thanks partly to an unfortunate habit of spending it on protective charms.
The fourth is currently known simply as Elevator Girl, a mysterious character responsible for operating the elevator inside Tasogare Hall.
The new name also ties directly into the game’s central idea.
Director Minseo Cha explained that Fareidolia is intended to represent discovering something familiar within an unfamiliar world while forming new relationships along the way. Anima City may not be Earth, but its everyday environments and interactions are deliberately designed to feel recognisable.
Players will not have to wait too long to see more.
Fareidolia will make its first playable public appearance at Tokyo Game Show 2026, which runs from 17 to 21 September at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan.
Nexon’s booth will recreate Tasogare Hall, while visitors will be able to try an in-development version of the game and take part in a rock-paper-scissors mini-game with their chosen character.
A new Fareidolia trailer is also scheduled to debut on 17 September, meaning its combat and wider gameplay systems could become considerably clearer next month.
Fareidolia is currently planned for PC, consoles, iOS and Android, although Nexon has yet to confirm which console platforms will be supported. A release date has also not been announced.
