Key Highlights:

  • Xbox Mythic Achievements are earned by completing every original Achievement in a game, with later DLC and update Achievements excluded.
  • Previously completed games can receive Mythic status retroactively, including eligible Xbox 360 titles.
  • Xbox Insiders can test the system now, but Microsoft has not announced when Mythic Achievements will reach everyone.

After more than 20 years of Gamerscore, Xbox Achievements are finally getting a permanent completion reward, with Microsoft beginning Insider testing of Mythic Achievements on September 29.

A Mythic Achievement is awarded after every Achievement from a game’s original list has been unlocked. Anything subsequently added through DLC or a title update does not count towards the requirement, and earning Mythic status is permanent even if more Achievements arrive later.

That makes the system broadly comparable to PlayStation’s Platinum Trophy, but importantly, Microsoft is defining completion around the original Achievement list rather than a particular Gamerscore total.

The change directly addresses one of the biggest weaknesses with Xbox’s existing completion system.

Earlier this year, GLN’s look at the Xbox Achievements visual redesign pointed out that an Xbox game sitting at 100% could lose that status when new DLC Achievements were added. At the time, Microsoft had improved how completed games were displayed but still offered no permanent equivalent to PlayStation’s Platinum Trophy.

Mythic Achievements fix that. Once the original list is complete and Mythic status has been earned, subsequent add-ons do not take it away.

I think that permanence is the most important part of the change. Earning every launch Achievement finally gives Xbox players a completion marker that cannot be undone months later because a developer releases another expansion.

Long-time Achievement hunters will not have to replay their old libraries either.

Microsoft says Mythic Achievements have already been applied to eligible games completed in the past, including Xbox 360 games. Opening the new Gaming section of an Xbox profile could therefore reveal multiple Mythic completions immediately rather than starting everybody from zero.

That retroactive support stretches the feature back towards the beginning of the Achievement system itself. Microsoft introduced Xbox Live Achievements alongside the Xbox 360 era in 2005, meaning qualifying completions from more than two decades of Xbox gaming can potentially be recognised by the new system.

Profiles are also being reorganised around that history.

A new Gaming tab shows Achievements, completed games and progress towards the player’s next Gamerscore milestone badge. Mythic completions receive a distinctive frame within Achievement history, while players can visit friends’ Gaming tabs to see which games they have taken to Mythic.

Games that have not yet been completed now show a Mythic progress bar at the top of their Achievement lists. Players can filter the list down to the original Achievements still required, while content introduced later is explicitly labelled add-on so there should be considerably less guesswork over what is actually needed.

The same progress information is being integrated elsewhere across Xbox, including the Guide and individual Achievement details.

This is not an isolated change. Microsoft has been rebuilding parts of its Achievement experience throughout 2026. April’s Insider update added clearer highlighting for 100% completed games and the ability to hide games from Achievement history, while June brought Xbox 360 Achievement information into modern Game Hubs. August then added sorting by completion percentage, Gamerscore and number of Achievements unlocked.

Mythic itself had also been hiding in plain sight before today’s reveal.

The name started appearing inside Xbox interfaces earlier in September, followed by Mythic assets and an unlock sound being uncovered within the Xbox PC app. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma had already teased the broader idea on August 5 after being asked directly about a Platinum Trophy equivalent, saying the team was working on something for later in the year.

One detail Microsoft has not stated in its official announcement is whether a Mythic Achievement contributes additional Gamerscore.

TrueAchievements reported before the reveal that Mythics are worth 0 Gamerscore. That would make Mythic a recognition layer rather than another way of increasing a player’s numerical score, but Microsoft has not yet confirmed the 0G value in its own announcement.

There are other unanswered edge cases too. Microsoft has not explained how Mythic status will handle games containing original Achievements that have since become unobtainable because servers or online modes have closed.

Nor has Xbox announced a date for general availability. The official Mythic Achievements announcement only confirms that Xbox Insiders can begin trying the feature now, so players outside the programme will have to wait for the wider rollout.

What is already clear is that Xbox has finally separated finishing a game as it originally launched from keeping every piece of post-launch content at 100%. For completionists who have been watching DLC repeatedly move the finish line, Mythic Achievements are a much bigger change than simply giving the existing notification a new badge.
