Mortal Kombat 1 Official Takeda Gameplay Trailer

Key Highlights:

  • Takeda joins Mortal Kombat 1 on July 23, 2024.
  • Gameplay trailer showcases his iconic whip-based combat.
  • Ferra arrives as a new Kameo fighter on the same date.

Mortal Kombat 1 Expands Roster: Takeda Returns with a Bang

The fighting game community is buzzing with excitement as NetherRealm Studios unveils the long-awaited gameplay trailer for Takeda, the final character in Mortal Kombat 1’s first Kombat Pass.

Set to join the roster on July 23rd, 2024, Takeda’s return marks a significant moment for fans of the series.

Takeda Takahashi, first introduced in Mortal Kombat X, has been a fan-favourite since his debut. Son of the blind swordsman Kenshi, and trained by veteran Scorpion, Takeda quickly gained popularity for his unique blend of ninja skills and high-tech weaponry.

His comeback in Mortal Kombat 1 seems to build on this foundation while introducing new elements to keep players on their toes.

The gameplay trailer, released just ahead of the EVO 2024 fighting game tournament, showcases Takeda squaring off against General Shao Khan and Johnny Cage.

Fans of MK X will be pleased to see the return of Takeda’s signature bladed whips and kunai, which formed the core of his fighting style in his previous appearance.

New Moves and Abilities

While Takeda’s core moveset remains familiar, the trailer reveals some exciting new additions to his arsenal:

  1. Grappling Dodge: Takeda can now use his whip to briefly grapple to the top of the screen, dodging incoming attacks.
  2. Explosive Ninja Stars: A new move that allows Takeda to set explosive stars with a short delay, adding a tactical element to his kit.
  3. Mix-up Potential: The trailer hints at Takeda’s ability to keep opponents guessing with high and low mix-ups from various ranges.

These new abilities seem to replace some of his previous moves, such as the light sword from MK X, suggesting a refinement and evolution of his fighting style.

As is tradition in Mortal Kombat, the trailer concludes with a showcase of one of Takeda’s new fatalities.

In a display of gruesome creativity, Takeda uses his bladed whips to circle round his opponent and literally shred his opponent into small pieces. The bladed whips wrap around the victim reminiscent of someone being tied up with rope.

This fatality promises to be a crowd-pleaser, living up to the series’ reputation for over-the-top violence.

New Kameo Fighter Ferra

In a double announcement, NetherRealm Studios also revealed that Takeda will be joined by a new Kameo fighter, Ferra, on the same release date.

Kameo fighters in Mortal Kombat 1 are support characters that can be called in during matches for assists or combo extensions.

The joint release comes after a delay to Ferra’s originally planned earlier launch.

NetherRealm explained that they wanted to ensure both characters were fully ready before release, demonstrating their commitment to quality.

With Takeda’s arrival, the first Kombat Pack for MK1 comes to a close. However, this doesn’t mark the end of support for the game.

Ed Boon, co-creator of the Beat ’em up series, has hinted at plans to continue supporting the game “far beyond” this final character release.

The July 23rd update will also bring balance changes to the title, including buffs to characters like Nitara and Li Mei, as well as adjustments to various Kameo fighters.

These changes aim to keep the game fresh and competitive, especially important with EVO 2024 on the horizon.
