Mortal Kombat 1, the brand spanking new iteration of the blood-pumping franchise has revealed a head-spinner of a twist involving Scorpion, the hellish hero who’s become the poster child for the series since his debut in ’92. He’s been everywhere – all the games, films, even rocking his very own animated special.

Mortal Kombat 1: Unearthing the Twisted Tale of Scorpion

You see, this flame-chucking ninja in the yellow iconic outfit, better known in the afterlife as Hanzo Hasashi, was a top warrior in the Shirai Ryu ninja clan. After his kith and kin were cruelly taken out by the rival Lin Kuei, our man Hanzo got a second lease on life, courtesy of the sorcerer Quan Chi, and was hellbent on avenging his loss against the icy Sub-Zero, aka Bi-Han. But Liu Kang’s time meddling antics in MK 11 have now made Scorpion and Sub-Zero brothers from the same Lin Kuei mother.

This revelation set fans’ tongues wagging that the man under Scorpion’s sunny mask in Mortal Kombat 1 might not be our beloved Hanzo. And lo and behold, Dominic Cianciolo, the tale-spinner for Mortal Kombat 1, seems to have given amazing insight at San Diego Comic-Con 2023 that it’s actually Kuai Liang donning the Scorpion guise – the second Sub-Zero from the original timeline, if you can keep up!

Rebooted Rivalries: The Sub-Zero-Scorpion Saga in MK1

Now, here’s the kicker – in the old world, Kuai Liang was more at odds with Scorpion than a tomcat and bulldog. He stepped into Sub-Zero’s icy shoes in MK 2 to honour his brother Bi-Han, who met his chilly end at Scorpion’s fiery hands, only to come back as the spectral ninja Noob Saibot. With Bi-Han and Kuai Liang playing happy families at the start of Mortal Kombat 1, this indicates a potential icy feud down the line between Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

This new spin on the Scorpion-Sub-Zero beef in Mortal Kombat 1, plus the just-spilled revelation that Scorpion could be Kuai Liang, throws an entirely new spanner in the works. Questions about Hanzo Hasashi and Noob Saibot’s standing in this rebooted timeline are popping up like daisies in spring. It’s all gone a bit pear-shaped, and we can’t wait to see how this tale unfolds when Mortal Kombat 1 drops this autumn.
