The Sting of Scorpion’s Secret Identity in Mortal Kombat 1

NetherRealm Studios has confirmed that Mortal Kombat 1 gives the Scorpion identity to Kuai Liang, fundamentally changing one of the series’ longest-running character relationships.

Story director Dominic Cianciolo disclosed the identity while discussing Smoke and the Lin Kuei during an IGN interview at San Diego Comic-Con 2023.

Cianciolo explained that Mortal Kombat 1 is developing Smoke’s relationship with “Kuai Liang, Scorpion” as part of the new brother dynamic between Smoke, Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

The wording confirms that the Scorpion seen in Mortal Kombat 1 is Kuai Liang, who served as the second Sub-Zero throughout much of the previous Mortal Kombat timeline.

Bi-Han remains Sub-Zero in Liu Kang’s New Era.

That means Mortal Kombat 1 begins with Bi-Han and Kuai Liang fighting alongside each other as Sub-Zero and Scorpion rather than inheriting the same Sub-Zero mantle at different points in history.

The change builds on the Lin Kuei trailer, which established Scorpion and Sub-Zero as brothers while showing growing tension over the clan’s future.

Bi-Han wants the Lin Kuei to become one of Earthrealm’s dominant powers, while Scorpion remains committed to the clan’s traditional responsibility of protecting the realm. Their different priorities suggest that Liu Kang’s new timeline has altered their identities without removing the conflict between them.

Cianciolo’s confirmation came while discussing Smoke’s rewritten backstory. Smoke is the adopted brother of Bi-Han and Kuai Liang rather than a blood relative, placing all three characters inside the same Lin Kuei family structure.

Kuai Liang’s new identity represents a major departure from previous Mortal Kombat continuity.

In the earlier timeline, Bi-Han was the original Sub-Zero before his death. Kuai Liang subsequently adopted his older brother’s codename and became the Sub-Zero used throughout most later games.

Scorpion was instead Hanzo Hasashi, a Shirai Ryu warrior whose feud with the Lin Kuei became one of Mortal Kombat’s defining rivalries.

Mortal Kombat 1 separates those identities differently. Bi-Han keeps the Sub-Zero mantle, while his younger brother Kuai Liang becomes Scorpion.

The change leaves one major question unanswered: where is Hanzo Hasashi?

NetherRealm has not revealed Hanzo’s position within Liu Kang’s New Era or whether he will appear elsewhere in Mortal Kombat 1.

For now, the confirmation establishes one of the clearest examples of how extensively Liu Kang’s rewritten character histories have changed familiar Mortal Kombat relationships without removing the characters themselves.
