A free version of Minecraft arrived on Raspberry Pi on 11 February 2013 when Mojang released Minecraft: Pi Edition for the low-cost computer.
Pi Edition was designed specifically for Raspberry Pi and built from a reduced version of Minecraft: Pocket Edition. Alongside the familiar ability to explore and manipulate a block-based world, Mojang included a programming interface that allowed players to change the game environment through code.
That made Pi Edition particularly suited to the educational purpose of Raspberry Pi. Players could use programming languages including Python to interact with the Minecraft world, giving beginners immediate visual feedback while experimenting with code.
The final release followed an earlier beta made available in December 2012. Raspberry Pi confirmed that the February version fixed bugs and added features compared with that earlier build.
Players originally needed a Raspberry Pi running the Raspbian operating system and could download Minecraft: Pi Edition without purchasing another version of the game.
Pi Edition was never intended to match the full feature set of Minecraft on PC or consoles, and Mojang eventually stopped actively updating it. Minecraft still identifies Pi Edition as a simplified Raspberry Pi version created primarily to teach programming concepts.
Minecraft was expanding quickly across other platforms during the same period, with the Xbox 360 edition passing six million sales only weeks after Pi Edition became available.
