Key Highlights:

  • Ed Boon confirmed that the traditional Krypt would not return in Mortal Kombat 1.
  • NetherRealm was developing a completely new system for unlocking rewards instead.
  • The replacement was later revealed as Invasions, a seasonal single-player progression mode.

Ed Boon confirmed in June 2023 that Mortal Kombat 1 would not feature the Krypt, with NetherRealm Studios instead developing a completely new system for unlocking content.

Speaking after the game’s first gameplay reveal, Boon was asked about new modes and confirmed that the long-running Krypt would not return.

“We have a whoooole new system,” Boon said.

“It’s not the Krypt. However, we’re incorporating a brand-new system for unlocks.”

NetherRealm did not identify that system during the interview, leaving its structure and reward mechanics unexplained at the time.

The Krypt had served as a recurring single-player unlock hub across previous Mortal Kombat games. Players could spend earned currency to access rewards such as concept art, cosmetics, gear and other hidden content.

Mortal Kombat 11 expanded the idea considerably by allowing players to explore Shang Tsung’s Island in third person while opening chests and discovering secrets.

Mortal Kombat 1 took a different approach.

The new system was later revealed as Invasions, a progression-based single-player mode built around interactive maps, fights, challenges, character builds and unlockable rewards.

Invasions did not simply recreate the Krypt under another name. NetherRealm combined reward progression with RPG-style mechanics and seasonal content, while players moved through structured maps rather than freely exploring a dedicated Krypt environment.

Ed Boon later described Invasions as another way for players to earn rewards inside the Mortal Kombat universe, serving a similar broader purpose to systems such as the Krypt and Konquest in earlier games.

After spending time with the finished mode, I found that Invasions inherited much of the Krypt’s reward function, but its board-style progression, modifiers and seasonal resets made it feel fundamentally different from Mortal Kombat 11’s exploratory Krypt.

Each Invasions season introduced themed encounters, bosses and rewards, with player progression through Talismans, Relics and other RPG-style systems forming part of the mode.

NetherRealm therefore did follow through on Boon’s promise of a new unlock system. What players received was not another Krypt, but a seasonal progression mode designed to combine combat, exploration and reward hunting in a different format.
