In another classic Ed Boon manoeuvre, the Mortal Kombat co-founder has shared yet another enigmatic clue concerning Mortal Kombat 1, sparking rumours of veteran combatants making a grand comeback. After relentless fan conjecture, May finally saw the unveiling of the latest chapter in the Mortal Kombat saga, through a graphic and awe-inspiring CGI teaser trailer. The promising MK 1 Reboot is poised to breathe new life into the series post-MK 11, following the freshly appointed Fire God Liu Kang as he shapes a tranquil world that is promptly challenged by the resurrection of Shang Tsung.

Fan Favourites Secured for the New Universe

Evidently, the faithful followers of the franchise are keen to see how the reboot presents well-known characters. Besides Liu Kang and Shang Tsung, the MK 1 trailer confirmed that crowd favourites such as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kung Lao, Princess Kitana, and Mileena would be part of the revamped universe. In addition, Johnny Cage, a constant figure in Mortal Kombat, will feature an alternate costume mirroring celebrated action hero Jean-Claude Van Damme. Of course, with the promise of a new gameplay trailer at this week’s Summer Game Fest, there’s plenty of scope for more familiar faces to rise from the depths in Mortal Kombat 1.

In a recent tweet, Ed Boon, the co-creator of Mortal Kombat, dropped another tantalising hint feeding into the speculation around Mortal Kombat 1’s lineup. Boon is no stranger to interacting with the MK community on social media. His new enigmatic message features the character selection screen from the 1997 classic, Mortal Kombat 4, with a cryptic note about some of the showcased characters “venturing back into action.”

Predictably, Boon’s tweet has sparked a flurry of theories among Mortal Kombat aficionados regarding which MK 4 participants he may be alluding to. A dragon emoji accompanying the post has led some to speculate that Reptile, the serpentine ninja missing from MK 11, might stage a triumphant return. Another guess points to Reiko, a devoted general to Shao Khan, once rumoured to be the Outworld despot reincarnated. And then there’s Jarek, the rough-and-tumble member of the Black Dragon clan, whose return could signal the comeback of the nefarious Kano.

In the reinvented Mortal Kombat 1 universe, anything seems possible, and Boon continues to keep the embers of speculation alive with his recent Mortal Kombat-themed social media posts. We might get more clarity about the returning characters in Mortal Kombat 1 during the upcoming gameplay trailer at the Summer Game Fest. Until then, fans can only speculate about which MK 4 fighters might join the next showdown.

Mortal Kombat 1 will be released on September 19th, available on PS5, Switch, Windows PC and Xbox Series X.
