Summer Game Fest confirmed on 23 May 2023 that Mortal Kombat 1 would receive its first gameplay reveal on 8 June, with series co-creator Ed Boon scheduled to appear during the presentation.
The announcement followed the game’s cinematic reveal five days earlier. That trailer established Fire God Liu Kang’s New Era and introduced the first returning characters, but it did not show how the game actually played.
The Summer Game Fest presentation was therefore the first opportunity to see NetherRealm’s combat changes in action.
One of the biggest unanswered questions concerned the newly announced Kameo Fighter system. NetherRealm had described Kameos as separate partner characters that assist the Main Fighter, but the original announcement had not demonstrated how those assists worked during a match.
The 8 June gamelay presentation resolved that uncertainty.
NetherRealm showed Kameo Fighters entering combat for assist attacks and Kombo extensions while remaining separate from the Main Fighter roster. The footage also demonstrated Fatalities and several core combat interactions.
The gameplay reveal introduced Kenshi, Jax, Goro, Kano, Sonya Blade and Stryker across the Main Fighter and Kameo rosters.
Kenshi appeared as a playable Main Fighter, while Jax, Goro, Kano, Sonya Blade and Stryker were demonstrated as Kameo Fighters.
I think the most important part of the presentation was seeing the Kameo system functioning inside actual Kombos. Until then, the mechanic had sounded closer to a general assist concept. The gameplay reveal showed that Kameo selection would directly affect offensive routes and match strategy.
The event also gave players their first proper look at Mortal Kombat 1’s combat presentation after the earlier cinematic trailer.
That made the Summer Game Fest appearance the point where Mortal Kombat 1 moved from a story and roster reveal into a demonstrable fighting game.
