As the highly anticipated launch of Mortal Kombat 1 draws near, fans can finally rest easy knowing the size of the game’s base roster of characters.
Warriors of Time: NetherRealm’s Altered Characters and Exciting Plotlines
NetherRealm Studios has been steadily teasing and unveiling details about the upcoming fighting reboot, captivating the interest of eager players. From plot revelations about Liu Kang’s revamped timeline to showcasing the impressive gameplay of the new MK1 Kameo supporting fighters, excitement has been building.
Enthusiasts were treated to an exclusive stress test back in June, providing a glimpse into the thrilling world of Mortal Kombat 1 before it’s official release. However, the excitement doesn’t stop there. NetherRealm has exciting plans in store, with a larger beta scheduled for later this month, offering players an even more immersive experience.
Adding to the anticipation, NetherRealm has been gradually unveiling the roster of altered warriors from the franchise’s rich history. Returning favourites like Scorpion and Johnny Cage have been given refreshing backstories as part of the game’s captivating time-warping plotline. Additionally, each new Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay trailer brings the excitement of confirmed new fighters, such as the recent character revelation of Geras, a god-like being who previously made waves in Mortal Kombat 11.
Revealing the Fighters: The Magnificent Base Roster of Mortal Kombat 1
MK 1’s story director, Dominic Cianciolo, recently sat down for an enlightening interview with Templeofgeek, sharing that the game will feature 24 playable characters upon it’s release. Cianciolo emphasised that each character will receive their fair share of attention, especially through the game’s compelling pre-fight banter and ladder endings, providing ample characterisation for all.
The process of selecting which characters to include has been a thoughtful one, involving creative minds like Ed Boon, NetherRealm’s creative director, along with invaluable feedback from the fans themselves. With 15 characters already confirmed for Mortal Kombat 1’s default roster, speculations abound that familiar faces such as Sindel, Reptile, and General Shao (formerly known as Shao Khan) may join the ranks in due course.

Furthermore, additional DLC characters are already generating excitement, with guest appearances from iconic figures like Omni-Man, Homelander, and Peacemaker. A tantalising rumour even hints at a second Kombat Pack that could introduce fan-favourites such as Deathstroke, Harley Quinn, and Doomslayer, alongside the return of beloved characters like Noob Saibot and Kano.
Even without the inclusion of DLC, Mortal Kombat 1’s base roster presents a formidable lineup of 24 playable characters, with nine roster slots yet to be officially filled. As anticipation continues to mount, fans are eager to see if long-requested fighters, like Deception’s Ashrah, will be among the final additions before the game’s grand debut.
Mortal Kombat 1 will unleash it’s breathtaking action on Windows PC, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S on September 19th.
