NetherRealm Studios used San Diego Comic-Con to reveal two major Mortal Kombat 1 roster updates, confirming six post-launch Kombat Pack Fighters alongside Li Mei, Tanya and Baraka for the base game.
The first trailer revealed the complete playable Fighter line-up for Kombat Pack 1.
Omni-Man, Quan Chi, Peacemaker, Ermac, Homelander and Takeda Takahashi will join Mortal Kombat 1 after launch.
The line-up combines three returning Mortal Kombat characters with three guest Fighters. Quan Chi, Ermac and Takeda represent the series itself, while Omni-Man comes from Invincible, Peacemaker from DC, and Homelander from The Boys.
The announcement also confirmed an earlier Mortal Kombat 1 leak that had connected Peacemaker and Homelander with NetherRealm’s downloadable roster.
Peacemaker uses the likeness of John Cena, who portrays the character in The Suicide Squad and the Peacemaker television series. NetherRealm has not yet detailed how extensively Cena will be involved beyond the character’s appearance.
A second trailer focused on the Umgadi and expanded Mortal Kombat 1’s launch roster.
Li Mei, Tanya and Baraka were all confirmed as playable Main Fighters, while Goro and Darrius appeared as Kameo Fighters.
Li Mei returns after serving as an Outworld warrior in previous timelines. Mortal Kombat 1 reimagines her as a former member of the Umgadi, the warrior priestesses responsible for protecting Outworld’s royal family.
Her position changed after the death of the previous ruler, with the trailer establishing tension between Li Mei and Tanya.
Tanya remains closely connected to the royal family and is shown protecting Mileena, whose Tarkat infection threatens her position as Outworld’s heir.
Baraka also returns with a rewritten history.
Rather than belonging to a separate Tarkatan race, Baraka is presented as an Outworld merchant who contracted Tarkat, the same disease affecting Mileena. The condition transformed him physically and placed him among other infected Outworlders.
The Umgadi trailer also demonstrated gameplay for all three returning Main Fighters and showed Goro and Darrius assisting through the Kameo Fighter system.
I think the most significant part of the SDCC reveal was how clearly NetherRealm separated its two rosters. The Kombat Pack trailer established six future playable Fighters, while the Umgadi footage simultaneously expanded the launch roster and Kameo selection.
The two trailers also continued Mortal Kombat 1’s focus on rewriting familiar characters rather than simply restoring their previous histories.
Li Mei, Tanya and Baraka all return with altered positions inside Liu Kang’s New Era, while Kombat Pack 1 mixes established Mortal Kombat characters with three high-profile guest Fighters.
