Serving as the 12th instalment of the time-honoured fighting series, Mortal Kombat 1 acts as the universe’s second narrative reboot, following 2011’s Mortal Kombat. The narrative picks up where Mortal Kombat 11 left off, after the defeat of Kronika. This leaves Fire God Liu Kang, newly crowned, to mould the timeline in his vision. Trusty staples like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Johnny Cage are due to make a comeback, with some appearing as Kameo Fighters, special aids selected pre-match to offer a helping hand during battles.
Mortal Kombat 1: The Reinstatement of Kombat Kast

Hints of a Kombat Kast resurgence were spotted on Twitter, with long-term fans inquiring the official Mortal Kombat account about the show’s potential revival. This conversation was captured by Reddit user JamieGorevan. While the studio has kept its cards close to its chest, some posts received responses indicating a very near return for the weekly spectacle. The possibility sparked anticipation amongst the Reddit community, with the previously mentioned JaimeGorevans sharing screenshots of these interactions, fuelling curiosity ahead of the game’s September 2023 release.
The roots of Kombat Kast can be traced back to the launch campaign of MK X, where it played a key role in showcasing gameplay and regularly unveiling new roster additions in the months leading up to its April 2015 debut. The show continued to shine, spotlighting community matches and rolling out DLC fighters, including Predator and Jason Voorhees. This successful format was resurrected for the lead-up to MK 11’s 2019 launch, reinforcing its effectiveness in promoting the game and its characters.
The return of Kombat Kast couldn’t come at a better time for NetherRealm, given the recent potential leak of the MK1 Lineup which we didn’t cover due to there being no real concrete confirmation of the leak’s authenticity. This could prompt the studio to pre-empt any further leaks, particularly after the game’s title and trailer were prematurely revealed. The only individual that should be leaking info on the game is the creator Ed Boon who regularly does just that.
