IO Interactive has confirmed that 007 First Light, the studio’s upcoming reimagining of James Bond’s origin story, will launch in 2026 as a full single-player experience – with a steady rollout of new missions to follow.
The game is in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.
In an interview with thegamebusiness, CEO Hakan Abrak stated that First Light will build on the success of Hitman: World of Assassination, the unified platform that transformed the Hitman trilogy into a live-service single-player framework.
That model attracted over 75 million players and helped the studio create a sustainable structure for long-term engagement.
In 007 First Light, players can expect a similar cadence of post-launch support.
However, IO was clear that Bond is not Agent 47, gameplay will emphasise more kinetic action, exotic vehicle segments, and freeform combat over the calculated precision of Hitman’s puzzle-box missions.
Abrak also reaffirmed that players will get a complete experience on day one. Any additional missions will serve to expand the world, not fill in gaps.
While Amazon MGM is involved as publishing partner and IP holder, IO maintains creative direction. “Everyone agrees on who Bond is,” Abrak said, quashing concerns about outside interference.
One announcement that surprised many, is that First Light is targeting Nintendo Switch 2. IO hopes to redeem itself after the poor reception of the Hitman Cloud version on the original Switch.
Porting the game natively to the upgraded platform will also help it reach a broader player base and potentially fit the portable experience IO believes Bond’s globetrotting missions can thrive in.
The game was first revealed during PlayStation’s recent State of Play via a cinematic teaser, with hardly any gameplay shown.
IO says more footage and deeper breakdowns are coming in future updates, but 007 First Light already signals a bold experiment in how blockbuster single-player games can evolve without sacrificing focus or quality.
If it works, IO might define a new standard for narrative-led franchises in the live-service age.
