Key Highlights:

  • 007 First Light (formerly Project 007) is confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2.
  • IO Interactive’s new Bond game serves as an origin story and planned trilogy starter.
  • Full title reveal arrived ahead of Summer Game Fest 2025.

IO Interactive has confirmed that its long-awaited James Bond origin story, now officially titled 007 First Light, will be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2.

Originally revealed back in 2021 as Project 007, the game has largely remained under wraps until recently.

While there’s still no release date, the official confirmation that it’s headed to Nintendo’s next-generation console is huge news for both Bond fans and Switch enthusiasts.

Unlike previous Bond games, Project 007 won’t follow the storyline of any film.

Instead, it’s a completely original take that introduces a fresh version of the character, one designed specifically for games, rather than borrowed from cinema.

“Players will step into the shoes of the world’s favourite secret agent to earn their 00 status in the very first James Bond origin story,”

IO Interactive

It’s a bold move that positions this Bond as something different: not just a digital replica of a Hollywood actor, but a character players can connect with and evolve alongside. The goal, according to IOI, is to create a Bond that belongs to gamers—a new face, a new journey, and potentially, a new legacy.

Designed for Trilogy Potential

Speaking to IGN last year, IOI CEO Hakan Abrak shared that the studio isn’t just focused on a single game:

“It’s completely beginning and becoming a story, hopefully for a big trilogy out there in the future.”

That ambition gives weight to what IOI is building. It’s not just one campaign and done—they’re laying the foundation for a full arc, starting from Bond’s earliest days and growing him across multiple titles.

Nintendo have a history with the famous spy franchise in gaming, as the classic N64 GoldenEye 007 received a Switch port in January 2023.

During a recent Nintendo showcase, the unmistakable sound of Bond’s theme music accompanied the reveal that Project 007 will make its way to Switch 2. For many fans, it was a goosebumps moment.

And it didn’t stop there either, Agent 47 from Hitman World of Assassination is also confirmed for the new hardware, showing IOI’s full commitment to the platform.

The rebrand to 007 First Light was unveiled in June 2025, along with a teaser image featuring a silhouetted Bond and the tagline #EarnTheNumber, confirming its focus as Bond’s official origin story.

Still, aside from some teaser footage, mostly showing off the iconic gun barrel sequence, details remain scarce. We do know that it will rely heavily on gadgets and espionage gameplay.

That said, the studio’s track record with Hitman has set expectations sky-high.

For now, Project 007 remains light on specifics. But with IO Interactive’s pedigree, an entirely new version of Bond, and the backing of a next-gen Nintendo console, this origin story is already shaping up to be something special.

Stay tuned. When the full briefing drops, you’ll want to be on mission.
