Key Highlights:

  • IO Interactive’s James Bond game officially titled 007 First Light.
  • Origin story focuses on Bond earning his 007 designation.
  • Full reveal expected during Summer Game Fest this week.

After years of silence since its initial announcement in 2020, IO Interactive’s upcoming James Bond game finally has a name: 007 First Light.

Previously known only as Project 007, the studio confirmed the title today via a striking teaser image featuring a silhouetted Bond figure bathed in a single beam of light, accompanied by the tagline “Game reveal this week” and the phrase “#EarnTheNumber”.

The phrase is more than a tagline, it’s the thematic core of the game.

As revealed in the official bio posted to X, 007 First Light will serve as a James Bond origin story.

Rather than adapting any previous film, this will be a completely original narrative, charting Bond’s early path toward becoming 007.

Players will step into the shoes of a rookie spy, tasked with proving himself worthy of the iconic designation.

While the teaser image reveals no gameplay footage, expectations are high.

IO Interactive is renowned for its Hitman franchise, known for its rich sandbox design, tactical freedom, and replayable stealth-action mechanics.

That design philosophy is expected to influence First Light, positioning the game as more than just a traditional shooter.

According to IOI CEO Hakan Abrak, the studio envisions First Light as the beginning of a new trilogy, with a long-term roadmap in mind.

Development on Hitman is currently paused as the team focuses entirely on the Bond project.

The timing of the reveal strongly suggests that more details will emerge during this week’s Summer Game Fest.

While the precise time hasn’t been confirmed, the showcase is set for Friday night in Los Angeles, aligning with Saturday morning in the UK.

A full trailer and possibly gameplay footage are anticipated.

Aside from the title and basic premise, several questions remain.

Who will portray Bond in the game? Will there be a likeness based on a past actor, or a completely new face? And will the game include hallmark elements such as a signature theme song, exotic locations, iconic characters like Moneypenny or nods to classic Bond titles like GoldenEye 64?

Notably, IOI has confirmed the game will release on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, making it one of the first high-profile titles announced for Nintendo’s next-generation console.

As the gaming world waits for the official unveiling, 007 First Light promises to be a bold, narrative-driven reintroduction to the world’s most famous British secret agent.
