IO Interactive’s Project 007: A Natural Evolution from Hitman

In an exciting development for fans of both gaming and espionage, IO Interactive’s upcoming James Bond game, codenamed Project 007, is shaping up to be a natural progression from the studio’s acclaimed Hitman series.

This news comes from a recent interview with IO Interactive’s Chief Development Officer, Veronique Lallier, who shared insights into the game’s development process.

Speaking to GamesRadar, Lallier expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating:

“It’s going to be a very cool, very awesome project. I’m super excited about it.”

She went on to explain how the team’s experience with Hitman has prepared them for this new venture:

“If you look at what we’ve done in the past with Hitman, 007 just feels organic for us because we’ve done stories about agents doing things.”

This connection between Hitman and James Bond isn’t surprising. Both franchises focus on skilled operatives navigating complex, often dangerous situations.

The stealth and strategy elements that made Hitman a hit could translate well to the world of 007, offering players a chance to step into the polished shoes of the world’s most famous secret agent.

Project 007 is set to feature an original Bond story, allowing players to experience the character’s origin and earn their 00 status.

While specific details about gameplay remain under wraps, Lallier’s comments suggest that fans of Agent 47 might find some familiar elements in this new title.

IO Interactive’s Growing Team

The development of Project 007 comes at an interesting time for IO Interactive. Unlike many studios facing challenges in the current gaming landscape, IO has been expanding its team, adding over 100 new members.

This growth suggests a strong commitment to delivering a high-quality Bond experience.

Lallier emphasised the importance of building on previous work, explaining, “It’s key to always look at what you can use, in terms of evolution, to help you better optimise your output.”

This approach could mean that the latest entry in the Bond gaming series will benefit from the refined mechanics and systems developed for the Hitman franchise, potentially resulting in a more polished final product.

While the gaming community eagerly awaits more information about Project 007, the developers are not putting all their eggs in one basket.

Lallier also teased another project in development, currently known as “Project Fantasy.”

This game appears to be a significant departure from the studio’s usual fare, with Lallier describing it as a vibrant passion project for the team. She confirmed that it will include an online mode but kept other details close to the chest.

As for Project 007, there’s still much we don’t know. No release date or platform information has been announced, and we’ve seen little beyond a brief teaser released in 2021.

However, given IO Interactive’s track record and Lallier’s comments, it’s clear that the team is approaching this project with both excitement and a wealth of relevant experience.

Back last year in November, we did learn that the title will be heavily focused on espionage and gadgets, while also giving off a tone closer to Daniel Craig’s version rather than Sean Connery or Roger Moore.

The pairing of IO Interactive with the James Bond license seems particularly fitting. As Lallier put it, “It’s so close to our DNA that it just feels seamless.”

This natural fit, combined with the studio’s proven ability to create engaging, sophisticated stealth-action games, bodes well for this latest entry.
