Set earlier in Bond’s career, 007 First Light presents a less seasoned version of the iconic spy, and the trailer wastes no time putting him in serious danger. Bawma is introduced as the ruler of Aleph, a sprawling black-market hub in Mauritania, and is shown calmly taunting a captured Bond while suspending him above a pit of crocodiles. It is a deliberately theatrical introduction that immediately signals the kind of villain IO Interactive is aiming for.

Visually and tonally, Bawma feels cut from classic Bond cloth. Draped in a striking yellow suit and marked with animal-print tattoos, he delivers monologues about control, power, and freedom with a composed menace that recalls some of the franchise’s most memorable antagonists. The crocodile pit alone is a knowing nod to Bond’s cinematic history, evoking similar perilous setups seen in Live and Let Die and Skyfall.

What works particularly well is how Bawma’s authority is framed. Rather than relying on gadgets or henchmen alone, he positions himself as a figure who knows “every whisper in every corner” of his city, presenting a villain built on influence and fear as much as brute force.

That balance feels well suited to IO Interactive’s strengths, especially given the studio’s Hitman background and its emphasis on systemic environments and social manipulation.

Kravitz’s involvement had leaked ahead of the show, but his on-stage appearance at The Game Awards confirmed the casting outright. While best known for his music career, Kravitz has previous acting experience, and his performance here leans into restrained confidence rather than exaggerated villainy.

007 First Light is shaping up to be a fresh take on James Bond in games, blending stealth-driven gameplay with a more grounded origin story. With a new Bond, a recognisably theatrical villain, and a clear cinematic ambition, IO Interactive appears keen to honour the franchise’s legacy while giving it room to evolve.

007 First Light launches 27 March 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
