Things are apparently going rather badly in Sanctuary.

Blizzard has officially revealed Diablo V, and for once we aren’t arriving just in time to stop everything going horribly wrong.

We’re already too late.

Diablo has won.

Diablo V was revealed during a packed BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony, which also brought new announcements across Blizzard’s biggest franchises, including World of Warcraft: Forever and several updates for Diablo IV. The next mainline Diablo is officially in development, with Blizzard confirming it is coming in Spring 2029.

Rather than beginning with Sanctuary once again sitting on the edge of destruction, Diablo V starts after that destruction has already happened. Its heroes have been defeated, Sanctuary has fallen and the Lord of Terror has finally achieved what we’ve spent decades trying to prevent.

It gives the next game a considerably different starting point.

Blizzard is building Diablo V around the question of what players must become when the world has already fallen. While details remain deliberately limited this far from release, that premise immediately changes our role within Sanctuary. This time, we’re not simply trying to prevent Diablo’s victory. We’ll be entering the world that exists because of it.

And apparently, defeating him four mainline games in a row wasn’t enough of a hint.

The reveal comes during Diablo’s 30th anniversary, with Blizzard using BlizzCon to look considerably further ahead than its current plans for Diablo IV. More than 130 million players worldwide have entered Sanctuary across the franchise since the original Diablo, and Diablo V now represents its next major chapter.

For now, Blizzard is keeping much of that chapter hidden.

Diablo V is still years away, and specific launch platforms and an exact release date have not yet been announced. Blizzard is beginning to pull back the curtain on the story, world-building and class philosophy behind the next game, but there is still considerably more of Sanctuary left to reveal.

With Spring 2029 still some distance away, there is plenty of time for Sanctuary to become even more unpleasant.

Diablo has also always been one of those games I associate with jumping online with my squad and disappearing for hours. It’s the kind of co-op experience I love, and one I’ve already found myself looking for in other action RPGS.

So, despite 2029 sounding painfully far away, Diablo V could be exactly the excuse for all of us to jump back into Sanctuary together.

There is something wonderfully threatening about announcing a Diablo game almost three years early and essentially leaving us with: you lost, see you in 2029.

A horned, bipedal creature with a lean, muscular body stands in a fiery landscape, a person is seated on its back. In the foreground, a cloaked figure stands silhouetted against the flames. The background is filled with the orange glow of intense fire and numerous figures in silhouette, some holding weapons, suggesting a battle or conflagration.

Diablo V may still be years away, but its first reveal has already established something far more interesting than a long feature list.

For once, we aren’t being asked to save Sanctuary before it’s too late.

We’re being asked what happens next.
