As Outworld’s High Mage, Rain uses water magic, portals, whirlpools, and his staff to perform some of the most elaborate finishers in Mortal Kombat 1. His moveset turns hydromancy into a weapon, ranging from high-pressure water attacks to traps capable of controlling large areas of the arena.

This guide covers all of Rain’s Mortal Kombat 1 finishers, including The Red Sea, Under Pressure, the Allergic Reaction Animality, and every Brutality. Each section provides platform-specific inputs, Input Distance requirements, unlock methods, Final Hits, and Additional Conditions.

How to Perform Rain’s First Fatality in MK1 (The Red Sea)

Input Distance: Close to Sweep Distance
Execution Difficulty: Easy

  • PlayStation: ⬇️⬇️⬅️🅾️
  • Xbox: ⬇️⬇️⬅️🅑
  • Nintendo Switch: ⬇️⬇️⬅️🅐

Rain surrounds his opponent with a violent column of water before using his staff to accelerate it into a vortex. The current tears away the victim’s limbs and flesh before Rain parts the water and splits the remaining body in half.

The Red Sea works from Close through to Sweep Distance. This gives the first Fatality a relatively forgiving activation window without requiring Rain to stand directly beside the opponent.

How to Perform Rain’s Second Fatality in MK1 (Under Pressure)

Input Distance: Jump Distance
Execution Difficulty: Easy

  • PlayStation: ⬇️➡️⬅️🅧
  • Xbox: ⬇️➡️⬅️🅐
  • Nintendo Switch: ⬇️➡️⬅️🅑

Rain wraps his opponent in a spiralling tendril of water and increases the pressure until their body is violently folded. He removes the victim’s head before finishing the sequence by crushing it beneath his foot.

Under Pressure requires Rain to move farther away than The Red Sea. The current correct position is at Jump Distance rather than the broader Mid-Range description used by several older move lists.

How to Perform Rain’s Animality in MK1 (Allergic Reaction)

Input Distance: Sweep Distance to Full Screen
Execution Difficulty: Easy

  • PlayStation: ➡️⬅️⬇️⬅️
  • Xbox: ➡️⬅️⬇️⬅️
  • Nintendo Switch: ➡️⬅️⬇️⬅️

Rain transforms into a pufferfish and forces his way into the opponent’s body through their mouth. The pufferfish rapidly inflates inside the victim until the pressure causes their entire body to burst apart.

Allergic Reaction works from Sweep Distance through to Full Screen, giving Rain considerably more freedom when positioning for his Animality than either Fatality.

The transformation also replaces Rain’s original Mortal Kombat Trilogy Animality, where he turned into a small elephant. Mortal Kombat 1 instead connects the finisher directly to Rain’s water-based identity through an aquatic animal.

For the animal transformation used by every other playable fighter, see our complete Mortal Kombat 1 Animality guide.

All Rain Brutalities in Mortal Kombat 1

Rain has The Klassic and five character-specific Brutalities unlocked through Fighter Mastery. Just A Little Dip, Down The Drain, Aqua Finished, Bubble Head, and Rainy Day unlock at Mastery Ranks 3, 5, 7, 10, and 15.

Two additional Brutalities were later added outside Rain’s Fighter Mastery progression. Around We Go and Portal Parts arrived with the Khaos Reigns-era finisher additions and were made available through the Seasonal Store.

The Klassic

Unlock Requirement: Available by default

  • PlayStation: ⬇️ + 🔺
  • Xbox: ⬇️ + 🅨
  • Nintendo Switch: ⬇️ + 🅧

Final Hit: Uppercut
Additional Condition: Hold Back Punch during the Final Hit.

Rain launches his opponent with an Uppercut before using his staff to remove their head with the spine still attached.

The Klassic is available without progressing Rain through Fighter Mastery, although its animation incorporates his staff rather than relying entirely on a conventional uppercut.

Just A Little Dip

Unlock Requirement: Fighter Mastery Rank 3

  • PlayStation: L1 or ⬜ + 🅧
  • Xbox: LB or 🅧 + 🅐
  • Nintendo Switch: L or 🅨 + 🅑

Final Hit: 100% Chance Of Pain (Back Throw)
Additional Condition: Rapidly press any basic attack button during the Final Hit.

Rain traps his opponent inside a sphere of water during 100% Chance Of Pain. The pressure crushes the victim inside the suspended water before Rain completes the throw.

Start tapping an attack button as soon as the Back Throw begins rather than waiting for the water sphere to form. The additional inputs need to register during the throw animation.

Brutality Variation: Rain can also trigger the universal MK11-style Screen Throw from a Back Throw. Instead of rapidly pressing an attack button, hold Up + Back Punch immediately after grabbing the opponent.

Down The Drain

Unlock Requirement: Fighter Mastery Rank 5

  • PlayStation: ⬅️➡️🅾️
  • Xbox: ⬅️➡️🅑
  • Nintendo Switch: ⬅️➡️🅐

Final Hit: Ancient Trap

Rain summons the Ancient Trap beneath his opponent. The vortex strips the flesh from their lower legs, leaving exposed bones before the victim disappears into the swirling water.

Down The Drain does not require a held direction or repeated button input. The important requirement is simply that Ancient Trap delivers the Final Hit.

The Close and Far variations of Ancient Trap can also activate the Brutality, allowing Rain to adjust the trap position without losing access to the finisher.

Aqua Finished

Unlock Requirement: Fighter Mastery Rank 7

  • PlayStation: ➡️ + 🔺, ⬜, 🅧
  • Xbox: ➡️ + 🅨, 🅧, 🅐
  • Nintendo Switch: ➡️ + 🅧, 🅨, 🅑

Final Hit: Waterwhirled
Additional Condition: Hold Back during the Final Hit.

Rain completes the Waterwhirled Kombo and tears his opponent in half. A blast of water sends the upper section of the victim’s body flying away from the remaining legs.

Because Waterwhirled begins with Forward + Back Punch, enter the full Kombo first and then transition to holding Back as the finishing strike connects.

Bubble Head

Unlock Requirement: Fighter Mastery Rank 10

  • PlayStation: ⬜, ⬜, 🔺
  • Xbox: 🅧, 🅧, 🅨
  • Nintendo Switch: 🅨, 🅨, 🅧

Final Hit: Attitude Adjustment
Additional Condition: Hold Down during the Final Hit.

Rain completes Attitude Adjustment before surrounding the opponent’s head with a compact sphere of water. The water strips away the flesh from their face until only the skull remains.

Bubble Head uses a straightforward three-hit Kombo, with holding Down during the final Back Punch as the only additional execution condition.

Rainy Day

Unlock Requirement: Fighter Mastery Rank 15

  • PlayStation: ⬇️⬇️⬆️
  • Xbox: ⬇️⬇️⬆️
  • Nintendo Switch: ⬇️⬇️⬆️

Final Hit: Rain God
Input Distance: At least Jump Distance
Additional Condition: Rain God must be fully charged. Hold Down as the fully charged attack releases and delivers the Final Hit.

Rain fully charges Rain God before calling down an enormous bolt of lightning that obliterates his opponent.

Rainy Day is considerably more demanding than Rain’s other Fighter Mastery Brutalities because the distance, charge and finishing input must all be correct.

From trying out this finisher myself and double checking the move-guide notes, I found the most reliable way to execute Rainy Day is to treat the input as two separate stages. Enter Down, Down, Up and continue holding Up to fully charge Rain God, then switch to holding Down as the charged attack releases.

Standing too close prevents the Brutality from activating even if the fully charged Rain God defeats the opponent, so maintain at least Jump Distance before beginning the sequence.

Seasonal Store Brutalities

Rain received two additional Brutalities through the Khaos Reigns-era Seasonal Store. Around We Go and Portal Parts are separate from Fighter Mastery and remain usable once acquired.

Around We Go

Unlock Requirement: Seasonal Store

  • PlayStation: ➡️ + ⬜, 🔺
  • Xbox: ➡️ + 🅧, 🅨
  • Nintendo Switch: ➡️ + 🅨, 🅧

Final Hit: Kraken Killer
Additional Condition: Hold Back during the Final Hit.

Rain completes Kraken Killer and launches his opponent before opening a water portal. He sends the victim through the portal, with another opening eventually ejecting their severed body parts.

Around We Go uses only the two-hit Kraken Killer Kombo. Hold Back as the final Back Punch connects to convert the normal attack into the Brutality.

Portal Parts

Unlock Requirement: Seasonal Store

  • PlayStation: ➡️ + 🅧, 🔺
  • Xbox: ➡️ + 🅐, 🅨
  • Nintendo Switch: ➡️ + 🅑, 🅧

Final Hit: Centrifugal Force
Additional Condition: Hold Back during the Final Hit.

Rain completes Centrifugal Force with his staff, knocking the opponent’s head away before the remaining body is destroyed by the follow-up strike.

Portal Parts and Around We Go share the same held Back requirement, but each uses a different two-hit Kombo. Portal Parts begins with Forward + Front Kick, while Around We Go begins with Forward + Front Punch.

Rain Fatalities and Brutalities Video Guide

Video Credit: TQT1995

The video guide demonstrates Rain’s Fatalities and original Fighter Mastery Brutalities, with the creator’s updated Rain collection also providing separate demonstrations for Allergic Reaction, Around We Go, and Portal Parts.

Watching Rainy Day in particular can help with the fully charged Rain God timing, as the required transition from holding Up to holding Down is less obvious from the written input alone.

In Mortal Kombat 1’s New Era, Rain serves as Outworld’s High Mage and holds a position within Empress Sindel’s royal court. His pursuit of increasingly powerful sorcery later draws him into the schemes surrounding Havik, giving Rain a stronger connection to Outworld’s magical and political conflicts than to Earthrealm’s Lin Kuei. You can explore our Sindel and Havik finisher guides for their Fatalities, Animalities, and Brutalities.
