Twelve years after launch, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is once again making waves.
Ubisoft’s recent backend activity, combined with a string of industry hints, has all but confirmed that a full remake of the fan-favourite pirate-themed entry is in the works, though the publisher has yet to formally acknowledge its existence.
According to SteamDB, Ubisoft updated Black Flag’s Steam page on June 4th and again on June 12th.
The changes include four new versions of a gameplay microtrailer that automatically plays when the store page is loaded. For a game released in 2013, this level of attention is highly unusual, particularly since the trailer files are tied to promotional material rather than technical fixes.
Several of the game’s content packages were also modified, though the specifics remain unknown.
This follows a cryptic tease from PureArts, a long-time Ubisoft merchandising partner. During a recent livestream, a representative stated, “There’s going to be something going on with Edward,” referring to the game’s protagonist.
They went on to suggest that an upcoming statue of Edward Kenway would reflect this development, fuelling speculation that his appearance may be reworked for a remake.
When and Where Will Ubisoft Officially Announce the Remake
While Ubisoft hasn’t offered a direct comment, this string of subtle updates and third-party nods has been building since early 2024.
Journalist Tom Henderson previously reported that the AC Black Flag remake had been in development since the early 2020s, with an initial target of late 2025. That window has reportedly shifted, possibly pushing release into early 2026 due to delays with Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
If Ubisoft sticks to tradition, an official announcement could happen at its next standalone showcase.
However, with Gamescom 2025 set for late August, it also provides a viable reveal opportunity, particularly if Ubisoft plans to generate buzz leading into a new release window.
Adding more fuel to the fire, the official Assassin’s Creed UK account recently posted a nostalgic meme about reliving games for the first time. The image? A scene from AC Black Flag. It’s hardly definitive, but in context, it’s yet another breadcrumb in what’s becoming a trail too obvious to ignore.
All of this remake talk started back in July 2023, and although things went quiet for a while, momentum seems to be gaining at full speed lately.
Despite mounting anticipation, some fans remain cautious. The team believed to be leading the remake effort is rumoured to be the same behind Skull and Bones, a project plagued by delays and poor reception.
That association has led to concern about whether Ubisoft can do justice to one of its most beloved titles.
The original game even got an update out of the blue 10 years on which was titled patch 1.08 and only had one minor fix when launching the game.
For now, all signs point to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag returning with a modern overhaul. But whether it’s a triumph or a cautionary tale remains to be seen, likely sooner rather than later.
