Key Highlights:

  • Edward Kenway’s actor Matt Ryan hints at a remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.
  • Multiple reports suggest a full rework is in development, led by Ubisoft Singapore.
  • Ubisoft remains silent, but fan expectations for an official reveal continue to grow.

The possibility of a remake for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag has gained fresh momentum following comments made by Edward Kenway’s voice actor, Matt Ryan.

During a fan convention appearance, Ryan gave what many now view as a not-so-subtle nod to the heavily speculated remake – adding fuel to reports that Ubisoft is preparing a major revival of the acclaimed pirate-themed entry.

Originally released in 2013, AC Black Flag is often praised as a standout within the Assassin’s Creed series.

Its open-world naval gameplay and swashbuckling setting distinguished it from previous titles, leading many fans to regard it as a high point for the franchise.

Since then, Ubisoft has moved in different directions, leaving ship combat behind in the main series while trying to spin it off into other ventures, most notably the long-delayed Skull and Bones.

Although Ubisoft has yet to confirm any remake, industry insiders and product leaks have indicated something is in development.

Reports suggest the remake is being handled by Ubisoft Singapore, the same studio behind Skull and Bones.

That team originally worked on the naval mechanics of AC Black Flag, making them a fitting choice for a potential reimagining.

Actor Drops a Hint Fans Can’t Ignore

Matt Ryan, who voiced Edward Kenway in the original game, sparked attention after a brief exchange with a fan at a convention.

When asked if they had finished AC Black Flag, Ryan replied, “You might have to beat it again,” followed by a knowing smile. He then added, “There’s a reason I say that, but I can’t say anything.”

The exchange, caught on camera by TikTok user therebelarchive and widely shared online, has been interpreted as a clear hint that Ryan’s involvement in the remake could go beyond a simple re-release.

Typically, remasters reuse existing audio. However, Ryan’s phrasing – and the suggestion of secrecy implies he may have returned to record new material or contribute to revised scenes.

Just last week, GamesLatestNews reported that the official Steam page for the pirate game had been updated with with new microtrailers.

Aiming for More Than a Graphical Upgrade

According to multiple reports, the remake will be more than just a visual update. Sources claim it will feature improvements comparable to Assassin’s Creed Shadows, including enhanced visuals, expanded environmental systems, and refinements to combat and wildlife AI.

If true, this would mark a full-scale rework rather than a standard remaster, a move that would likely justify a standalone release, even with the original game still performing well on current consoles.

One lingering question is why Ubisoft would remake a title already accessible on modern hardware at 60 frames per second.

Critics may question the value unless the project introduces meaningful changes.

Though, AC Black Flag remains a fan-favourite, and a modernised version with deeper gameplay could revive interest from both veterans and newcomers.

With no major Assassin’s Creed title expected by the end of this year, the timing appears ideal for a remake to fill the gap.

Ubisoft typically uses the holiday period for major releases, and a refreshed Black Flag could provide strong commercial appeal – especially if marketed with improvements in line with recent entries.

Ubisoft declined to comment on the project last month when approached by media following a merchandise leak. The company has remained consistent in avoiding direct statements, which aligns with its usual approach of revealing games closer to launch.

For now, fans are left to analyse every clue and wait for official confirmation. If Ryan’s words are anything to go by, it may not be long before the sails are hoisted once again.
