Mortal Kombat 1 Welcomes Ghostface from Scream (Trailer)

NetherRealm Studios has released the official Ghostface gameplay trailer for Mortal Kombat 1, showcasing the masked killer from Scream using knives, surprise attacks and additional Ghostface accomplices to overwhelm opponents.

The trailer, released on 13 November 2024, also reveals gruesome Fatalities and an Animality ahead of the character’s arrival through the Khaos Reigns expansion.

Ghostface will be available on 19 November for Khaos Reigns owners, with a standalone release scheduled for 26 November 2024 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC.

Rather than giving Ghostface the supernatural abilities of other Mortal Kombat Fighters, NetherRealm has built his moveset around the hunting knife and unpredictable behaviour associated with the Scream films.

The footage demonstrates rapid stabbing combinations, lunging attacks and a low crawling manoeuvre that allows Ghostface to approach opponents close to the ground.

However, his most distinctive combat mechanic involves calling additional Ghostface killers into the fight.

During the accompanying Kombat Kast presentation, NetherRealm confirmed that the playable Ghostface is supported by two masked individuals from the Mortal Kombat universe.

Known as the Black Dragon Enforcer and Black Dragon Assassin, these accomplices are connected to Kano’s criminal organisation and can participate in attacks.

The studio has deliberately withheld their identities, preserving the mystery surrounding the person behind the mask that has defined the Scream franchise.

It’s a clever way to adapt Ghostface into a fighting game. What interests me most is that the additional killers aren’t merely background references; they’re integrated into his fighting style, making attacks from unexpected directions part of his identity.

The character’s presentation also remains faithful to the films, with Roger L. Jackson returning as the voice of Ghostface. His distinctive delivery accompanies the familiar black robe, white mask and threatening knife.

The trailer’s finishing moves take that adaptation even further.

One Fatality involves multiple masked attackers working together to violently dismember an opponent, reflecting the recurring partnership between killers in the films.

The other takes a more unusual approach, initially appearing to show a conventional Fatality before pulling the camera back to reveal Johnny Cage playing Mortal Kombat 1 on a screen.

As Johnny watches the action, another Ghostface appears behind him and attacks, turning the execution into a literal fourth-wall break.

The moment captures the self-aware horror and dark comedy of Scream while making use of Mortal Kombat’s cinematic finishing moves.

Ghostface also receives an Animality, transforming into a large predatory scavenging bird that tears into his defeated opponent.

Ghostface was originally announced as one of three guest characters in the Khaos Reigns expansion, alongside the T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Conan the Barbarian.

The expansion launched in September with Noob Saibot, Cyrax and Sektor, making Ghostface the first of its three post-launch guest Fighters to become available.

Although all three guest characters belong to Kombat Pack 2, they are full playable Fighters rather than supporting Kameos.

For Ghostface, the combination of knife-based combat, additional masked killers and fourth-wall-breaking Fatalities gives NetherRealm an unusual opportunity to bring slasher-film conventions directly into Mortal Kombat 1.

Later Update: NetherRealm subsequently revealed its next guest character in the Conan the Barbarian teaser, continuing the Khaos Reigns rollout following Ghostface.
