Mortal Kombat 1 Unleashes Khaos with Ambitious Year 2 Plans

The centrepiece of this reveal is the Khaos Reigns expansion, a story-driven DLC that’s poised to shake up the MK universe.

Set to launch on September 24th 2024, Khaos Reigns picks up where the main campaign left off, thrusting players into a multiversal crisis.

The expansion revolves around Titan Havik, a interdimensional invader hell-bent on spreading anarchy across all timelines.

This narrative promises to push the boundaries of Mortal Kombat’s already complex lore, offering fans a fresh perspective on their favourite characters.

New Kombatants Enter the Fray

The expansion introduces a roster of six new fighters, split between returning favourites and guest characters that are sure to raise eyebrows.

Longtime fans will be pleased to see the return of Noob Saibot, alongside reimagined versions of Sektor and Cyrax.

In an intriguing twist, both Sektor and Cyrax have been reimagined as female characters, adding a new dimension to these classic cyborg ninjas.

However, it’s the guest fighters that are truly stealing the spotlight. In a nod to pop culture, players will soon be able to take control of Ghostface from the Scream franchise, the shape-shifting T-1000 from Terminator 2, and the legendary Conan the Barbarian.

These unexpected additions promise to bring their unique flavours to MK’s brutal combat system.

They will join other franchises that have crossed over into the MK Universe such as Homelander from The Boys, Comic antihero Omni-Man and Peacemaker.

While Noob Saibot, Sektor, and Cyrax will be available at launch, fans will have to exercise patience for the guest fighters.

NetherRealm has yet to announce a specific release window for these movie-inspired kombatants.

The Return of Animalities

In a move that’s sure to delight long-time fans, Khaos Reigns will reintroduce Animalities to the Mortal Kombat franchise.

First seen in 1995’s Mortal Kombat 3 for the Nintendo SNES and Sega Megadrive/Genesis, these beastly finishing moves allow fighters to transform into animals to deliver the final blow.

The trailer gave us a glimpse of a variety of Animalities from fighters such as Scorpion morphing into his namesake creature and Mileena morphing into a monstrous praying mantis, hinting at the gruesome spectacles to come.

What’s particularly exciting is that every playable character will have their own Animality, including the guest fighters.

The thought of iconic film characters like the T-1000 transforming into beasts adds an extra layer of intrigue to these already outlandish finishers.

Pricing and Availability

Khaos Reigns will be available digitally across all platforms that currently support Mortal Kombat 1. The expansion is priced at £49.99, with a slight discount for Nintendo Switch owners that’s TBC.

A lot of other gaming news websites have stated the price for the Nintendo Switch console, but there’s no way of knowing this as the link to purchase says coming soon without any additional information.

What we can say is it will be slightly cheaper than any other platforms the DLC is released on.

It’s also worth noting that Kombat Pack 2, which includes all the new fighters, is bundled with Khaos Reigns and won’t be available as a standalone purchase.

As a gesture of goodwill, NetherRealm is offering a free MK95 Scorpion skin to all players, modelled after his appearance in the 1995 live-action Mortal Kombat film.

This nostalgic nod to the franchise’s history is available now, giving players something to enjoy while they wait for the expansion.

While the excitement for new content is palpable, it’s important to note that Mortal Kombat 1 isn’t without its challenges.

Xbox players, in particular, have reported significant issues following the most recent update, including frequent crashes and texture problems.

The update file for Xbox was also notably larger than on other platforms, suggesting there may be underlying issues specific to this version of the fighting game.

NetherRealm Studios will need to address these technical hurdles to ensure all players can fully enjoy the upcoming content.

The developer’s track record suggests they’re likely working on fixes, but Xbox players may want to keep an eye out for patches in the coming weeks and we got you covered right here on GLN.

With Khaos Reigns, NetherRealm Studios is demonstrating its commitment to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 well into its second year.

The mix of story content, new characters, and the return of fan-favourite features like Animalities shows a deep understanding of what MK fans crave.

Fans can expect more details to emerge in the coming weeks about the expansion’s story, the unique moves of the new fighters, and perhaps even a glimpse at some of the wilder Animalities we’ll be seeing.
