Mortal Kombat 1 Peacemaker Gameplay Trailer Reveals Janet Cage

NetherRealm Studios has released the first Peacemaker gameplay trailer for Mortal Kombat 1, showcasing the DC Comics antihero’s firearms, powerful helmet abilities and loyal eagle companion, Eagly.

The trailer, released on 22 February 2024, also provides the first gameplay look at Janet Cage, an upcoming Kameo Fighter, and confirms the arrival of cross-platform multiplayer later this month.

Peacemaker, portrayed and voiced by John Cena, will become playable on 28 February for Kombat Pack and Premium Edition owners, before becoming available for individual purchase on 6 March 2024.

The character was originally announced as part of the Kombat Pack 1 roster alongside Omni-Man, Quan Chi, Ermac, Homelander and Takeda Takahashi.

Peacemaker Brings His Helmet Abilities and Eagly to Mortal Kombat 1

Peacemaker combines gunplay, close-range attacks and specialised equipment in Mortal Kombat 1, drawing directly from his portrayal in The Suicide Squad and the Peacemaker television series.

The gameplay trailer shows him using several of his signature helmet abilities, including Sonic Boom, which unleashes a devastating burst of energy, and movement techniques built around his anti-gravity powers.

His helmet also enables a forward-moving torpedo attack, giving Peacemaker another way to close the distance between himself and an opponent.

Eagly plays an equally important role. Rather than appearing only during cinematic attacks, Peacemaker’s bald eagle companion can be summoned during combat to strike opponents and interfere with their Kameo Fighters.

The trailer also features Peacemaker’s firearms and blow-dart attacks, extending his offensive options beyond straightforward punches and kicks.

According to NetherRealm design manager Nick Nicastro, the development team closely studied scenes from Peacemaker’s film and television appearances when creating his moveset.

That attention extends to his personality, dialogue and movements, with John Cena reprising the character rather than NetherRealm relying on an impersonation.

The trailer even incorporates Peacemaker’s distinctive dancing, preserving the absurd humour that helped establish his popularity.

His Fatality takes the violence considerably further, using a jetpack to launch an opponent into the air before a devastating finishing attack.

What stands out to me is how much of Peacemaker’s identity has been built into his actual fighting mechanics. His helmet powers and Eagly aren’t simply references placed inside a finishing animation; they’re combat tools with different offensive purposes.

That makes the character a particularly interesting addition following the supernatural abilities showcased in December’s Quan Chi gameplay reveal.

Janet Cage Revealed as a New Kameo Fighter

The trailer also introduces Janet Cage, an alternate-reality version of Johnny Cage who will join Mortal Kombat 1 as a downloadable Kameo Fighter.

Janet retains the Hollywood-inspired personality associated with Johnny Cage, including flashy attacks and exaggerated showmanship.

Her appearance includes an attack involving an autographed photograph, reflecting the character’s celebrity persona.

Unlike Peacemaker, Janet Cage will not occupy a standard playable Fighter slot. She belongs to Mortal Kombat 1’s separate Kameo Fighter system, allowing players to select her as a support character who performs assists during matches.

That’s very important because the trailer reveals two different forms of downloadable content: a fully playable character with his own moveset and a Kameo designed to complement another Fighter.

Janet Cage is scheduled for release in March 2024, both through the Kombat Pack and as a separate purchase.

Her exact release date has not been specified in the original gameplay announcement.

Peacemaker Release Dates and Krossplay Confirmed

Peacemaker will be the third post-launch playable Fighter in Kombat Pack 1, following Omni-Man and Quan Chi.

His release schedule is confirmed as follows:

• 28 February 2024: Early access for Kombat Pack and Premium Edition owners.
• 6 March 2024: General availability through standalone purchase.
• March 2024: Janet Cage joins the Kameo Fighter roster.

NetherRealm has also confirmed that Krossplay will launch on 28 February, allowing players on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC to compete against one another.

PC support includes both Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Krossplay will support one-on-one Kombat League and Kasual matchmaking, along with private matches between friends on supported platforms.

Nintendo Switch is not included in the announced Krossplay feature.

The addition represents a significant multiplayer improvement, particularly for players who want to compete against friends using different systems.

Between Peacemaker’s unusual fighting style, Janet Cage’s upcoming assists and cross-platform matchmaking, the February update is shaping up to be one of Mortal Kombat 1’s more substantial post-launch additions.

Later Update: NetherRealm continued the Kombat Pack rollout with the Ermac gameplay trailer, showcasing the returning sorcerer’s soul-based abilities alongside the upcoming Mavado Kameo Fighter.
