NetherRealm Studios has released the first Homelander teaser trailer for Mortal Kombat 1, introducing the villain from The Boys with two brutal Fatalities, a disturbing milk-bottle introduction and a brief look at returning Kameo Fighter Ferra.
The footage debuted during CCXP Mexico on 5 May 2024, offering the clearest look yet at Homelander’s in-game appearance following his announcement as part of Kombat Pack 1.
Although the teaser features some of his signature superpowers, it is not a full gameplay demonstration. NetherRealm has yet to reveal his complete fighting moveset or confirm an exact DLC release date.
The trailer opens with Homelander drinking milk from a baby bottle, directly referencing one of the character’s more unsettling habits in The Boys television series.
It’s an unusual introduction even by Mortal Kombat standards, but one that immediately establishes NetherRealm’s interpretation of the character.
Homelander is portrayed with the same red, white and blue costume, cape and arrogant personality associated with his television counterpart.
The teaser then takes a considerably more violent turn, showing two Fatalities built around his superhuman abilities.
One finishing sequence demonstrates Homelander’s heat vision as he burns through his opponent’s head using concentrated laser beams.
The other sends an opponent flying into the path of an aircraft, turning a seemingly ordinary uppercut into a gruesome mid-air execution.
Both finishers make effective use of abilities and imagery associated with the character, rather than relying on generic Mortal Kombat attacks.
What stands out to me is how recognisable the finishing sequences are to anyone familiar with The Boys. NetherRealm has taken Homelander’s abilities and transformed them into Fatalities without losing the cruelty that defines him.
One notable difference from the television series is the voice performance. Antony Starr, who portrays Homelander in The Boys, is not providing his voice in Mortal Kombat 1.
The teaser offers an opportunity to hear the game’s interpretation, although NetherRealm has not identified the replacement voice actor in this announcement.
Homelander is one of three comic-book guest fighters included in the original Mortal Kombat 1 Kombat Pack, alongside Omni-Man from Invincible and Peacemaker from DC Comics.
Like Homelander, Omni-Man possesses flight and extraordinary strength, making the earlier Omni-Man gameplay trailer an interesting comparison for fans anticipating a future matchup.
Homelander will become the fifth playable Fighter released through Kombat Pack 1, following Omni-Man, Quan Chi, Peacemaker and the recently introduced Ermac.
The teaser also offers a brief glimpse of Ferra, the returning character originally introduced alongside Torr in Mortal Kombat X.
This time, Ferra is joining the separate Kameo roster rather than appearing as part of a fully playable Ferra/Torr partnership.
Her appearance provides another preview of the remaining Kombat Pack content, although her precise release date has not yet been announced.
Homelander’s arrival also comes as The Boys approaches its fourth television season, scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on 13 June 2024.
With his introduction and Fatalities now revealed, the next major question is how NetherRealm will translate his flight, heat vision and superhuman strength into a complete playable moveset.
