Key Highlights:
- Geras returns as a playable Main Fighter in Mortal Kombat 1 after debuting in Mortal Kombat 11.
- Liu Kang has entrusted him with guarding the Hourglass in the New Era.
- The Keepers of Time trailer shows Geras retaining his sand and time-manipulation abilities.
NetherRealm Studios has confirmed Geras as a playable Main Fighter in Mortal Kombat 1, giving the former servant of Kronika a very different role in Liu Kang’s New Era.
The reveal came through the new Keepers of Time trailer, which debuted during DreamCon 2023 and focused on Geras’ relationship with Liu Kang.
Geras first appeared in Mortal Kombat 11 as an immortal construct created to serve Kronika. Mortal Kombat 1 instead places him alongside Liu Kang as an ally and guardian of the Hourglass.
During the trailer, Liu Kang identifies himself as Keeper of Time while describing Geras as the keeper of the Hourglass.
That change immediately separates this version of Geras from his previous role.
Rather than protecting Kronika’s attempts to repeatedly restart history, Geras now appears responsible for safeguarding the device Liu Kang used to create the New Era.
The trailer also establishes tension around the stability of that timeline. Geras warns Liu Kang that his efforts to shape history towards peace may already have caused unforeseen consequences.
Geras retains the time-manipulation abilities that defined his Mortal Kombat 11 moveset.
Gameplay footage shows him controlling sand, freezing opponents in place and manipulating their position in time during Kombos. One sequence creates a second temporal version of the opponent before Geras uses both bodies as part of the attack.
The trailer also shows new Fatality footage from Geras and Liu Kang.
I think the most significant part of Geras’ return is his allegiance rather than his moveset. His powers remain recognisable, but placing Kronika’s former enforcer beside Liu Kang gives him a completely different narrative purpose in the New Era.
Geras is also the first character introduced in Mortal Kombat 11 to be confirmed for Mortal Kombat 1’s playable roster. Geras becomes another confirmed addition to the growing Main Fighter roster.
The Keepers of Time trailer continues NetherRealm’s pattern of reworking established characters rather than simply restoring their previous roles, with Geras moving from an antagonist aligned with Kronika to one of Liu Kang’s closest protectors.
