Key Highlights:

  • Mortal Kombat 1’s first gameplay trailer debuted during Summer Game Fest on 8 June 2023.
  • Kenshi joined the Main Fighter roster, while Jax, Goro, Kano, Sonya Blade and Stryker appeared as Kameo Fighters.
  • The footage demonstrated Kameo assists, Fatal Blows, Fatalities and defensive Breakers for the first time.

NetherRealm Studios showed the first Mortal Kombat 1 gameplay during Summer Game Fest on 8 June 2023, demonstrating the Kameo Fighter system and revealing six additional returning characters.

The presentation fulfilled the gameplay reveal announced in May and gave players their first look at how Liu Kang’s New Era translated into actual combat.

Mortal Kombat 1’s first gameplay trailer demonstrates Kameo assists, Fatal Blows, Fatalities and defensive Breakers while revealing Kenshi, Jax, Goro, Kano, Sonya Blade and Stryker

Kenshi Takahashi joined the Main Fighter roster, while Jax, Goro, Kano, Sonya Blade and Stryker appeared as Kameo Fighters.

NetherRealm also demonstrated several previously confirmed Kameos, including Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Kung Lao. Kameo Fighters could enter a match for offensive and support actions while remaining separate from the selected Main Fighter.

The footage showed Kameos extending Kombos, contributing to Fatal Blows, performing Fatalities and assisting with defensive Breakers. NetherRealm also confirmed that some characters could exist on both rosters, allowing fighters such as Sub-Zero to be selected as either the Main Fighter or Kameo partner.

I think this was the point where the Kameo concept finally made sense as more than a generic assist mechanic. Seeing the second character integrated into Kombos, defensive situations and finishers made it clear that Kameo selection would directly influence how a Main Fighter played.

The trailer also expanded Mortal Kombat 1’s New Era story.

Mileena was shown suffering from Tarkat, while Kitana remained her sister within Outworld’s royal family. Scorpion and Sub-Zero were presented as brothers fighting for the future of the Lin Kuei, and Raiden and Kung Lao appeared as Earthrealm champions. Later story details established that Kuai Liang was the new Scorpion, while Bi-Han remained Sub-Zero.

Kenshi’s introduction established another altered character history. His early story centred on recovering the ancestral sword Sento and restoring his family name.

The gameplay presentation also gave Johnny Cage considerably more screen time after he was absent from the original cinematic reveal trailer.

Summer Game Fest therefore did more than demonstrate Mortal Kombat 1’s combat. It established the practical role of Kameo Fighters, expanded the Main Fighter and Kameo rosters and provided the first substantial look at how NetherRealm had rewritten familiar character relationships for Liu Kang’s New Era.
