Jean-Claude Van Damme was confirmed for Mortal Kombat 1 on 18 May 2023 through an alternate skin for Johnny Cage, finally bringing the martial arts star into the series more than three decades after its creators first tried to work with him.
The skin was announced as part of Mortal Kombat 1’s Kombat Pack and included Van Damme’s likeness, voice and outfit for Johnny Cage.
Its significance went far beyond another celebrity cosmetic.
Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has explained that Van Damme was originally intended to be involved with the first Mortal Kombat project. When that collaboration did not happen, the developers created Johnny Cage, whose Hollywood martial artist persona was heavily influenced by Van Damme and films such as Bloodsport.
That history made Johnny Cage the natural character for Van Damme’s eventual appearance.
I think that connection is what made the announcement genuinely notable. NetherRealm was not simply adding a famous actor to Mortal Kombat 1. It was pairing Johnny Cage with one of the real-world inspirations behind the character’s creation.
The Jean-Claude Van Damme skin formed part of Kombat Pack 1, which was bundled with Mortal Kombat 1’s Premium Edition. The UK Premium Edition launched at £89.99 and also provided early access to the game, downloadable Fighters and other bonus content.
Moreover, for an extravagant £249.99, the Kollector’s Edition offered all of the Premium perks along with a 16.5-inch Liu Kang sculpture by COARSE, an exclusive Liu Kang in-game character skin, three artwork prints, a steel case, and an additional 1,450 Dragon Krystals, totalling 2,700.
Johnny Cage had already been confirmed as a playable Main Fighter despite being absent from Mortal Kombat 1’s cinematic reveal trailer.
NetherRealm showed the first substantial footage of the Jean-Claude Van Damme skin in September 2023. The final version recreated Van Damme as Johnny Cage rather than introducing him as a separate Fighter.
Van Damme also recorded dialogue for the character, making the collaboration more extensive than a simple visual likeness. He functions as an alternate version of Johnny Cage, meaning he uses the same Johnny Cage Fatalities and Brutalities.
The completed skin therefore closed a circle that began before the original Mortal Kombat launched in 1992. Johnny Cage was created partly from the idea of a Hollywood martial arts star, and Mortal Kombat 1 finally allowed Jean-Claude Van Damme to inhabit that role himself.
