Scarcely had the dust settled on the announcement of Mortal Kombat 1, when NetherRealm Studios unveiled further titbits about this much-anticipated fighting game, including the intriguing subject of microtransactions. MK1 represents the newest evolution in the fighting title’s lineage, reviving a franchise that has been delighting fans since its first appearance in 1992 arcades.

Riding on the coattails of conjecture and leaked information about MK 12, NetherRealm Studios has officially greenlit the next episode in its combat-centric franchise. The newcomer is none other than Mortal Kombat 1, rebooting the series in the wake of the narrative unfolding in MK 11: Aftermath.

Fire God Liu Kang valiantly disrupted Shang Tsung’s malicious plans, cultivating a New Era and providing the realms with a clean slate, a chance to prosper in tranquillity. Yet, tranquillity has a habit of being short-lived in the Mortal Kombat cosmos, with the ominous return of iconic Outworld emperor Shao Kahn to Earthrealm lurking on the horizon.

The Promise of Microtransactions: Dragon Krystals Revealed

Perusing the official Mortal Kombat website, a quick browse through the FAQ section reveals the inclusion of microtransactions in Mortal Kombat 1. The intended application of the in-game currency, aptly named Dragon Krystals, remains shrouded in a veil of mystery, though it is expected to facilitate the procurement of supplementary skins for favoured combatants and unlock a variety of aesthetic enhancements.

NetherRealm Studios is still to announce the precise worth of these Dragon Krystals, however, patrons of the Mortal Kombat 1 Premium Edition are promised a stash of 1,250 Dragon Krystals, while supporters of the Kollector’s Edition are due to receive a generous total of 2,700 Dragon Krystals.

Outworld emperor Shang Tsung

The official teaser trailer for MK 1 confirmed the comeback of several crowd-pleasing characters, amongst them Fire God Liu Kang, Outworld emperor Shang Tsung, Kitana and her malevolent twin Mileena, in addition to the once-adversaries-now-comrades, Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

NetherRealm Studios is expected to reveal further characters in the weeks to come, adding to the burgeoning Beat ‘Em Up roster, particularly those who played an instrumental role in earlier instalments in the series.

Pre-order Bonuses and Beta Access: Early Perks for Fans

Early adopters who pre-order Mortal Kombat 1 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S can look forward to participating in its beta, set to initiate in August 2023. For those who don’t manage to secure early access, they’ll have to bide their time until the formal release of MK 1 on September 19th, 2023.
