Key Highlights:

  • Mouse is a 1930s-inspired cartoon shooter developed by Fumi Games
  • Players take control of a private eye mouse fighting corruption with guns
  • Features retro “rubber hose” animation and monochromatic noir style
  • New gameplay trailer shows violent tommy gun shootouts and explosions
  • Slated to launch on consoles and PC sometime in 2025

An indie game studio based in Warsaw called Fumi Games has revealed new footage of its highly-stylised shooter titled Mouse. Inspired by vintage 1930s cartoons and classic noir aesthetics, players step into the oversized shoes of a private investigator rodent on a quest to take down organised crime in his city.

Black and White Violence in a Hand-Drawn World

As evident in the new trailer which is courtesy of IGN, Mouse oozes personality thanks to its striking monochromatic art style emulating the look of early animated shorts. Environments and characters feature the iconic “rubber hose” simplification of limbs and features, creating a bouncy sense of motion and exaggerated reactions.

Fuelled by big band jazz music in the background, the mouse protagonist unleashes torrents of cartoon firearm violence to devastating effect. Tommy guns knock off enemies’ heads and send many to an ashy grave in explosive fashion. He can also uppercut foes into oblivion with a powerful Popeye-style windup punch.

Beyond shooting and pugilism, players have a range of interactive options to employ creatively against the ranks of mobster mice. These include dropping heavy objects like pianos or safes, igniting bundles of TNT dynamite, and even consuming spinach power-ups in line with the game’s 1930’s setting.

Bringing Back Classical Animation

The indie team at Fumi Games has cited inspirations ranging from pioneering animators like Ub Iwerks to seminal characters such as Mickey Mouse and Felix the Cat in crafting Mouse’s throwback aesthetic. And based on the positive buzz thus far, they have achieved strong visual flair.

Fans of traditional hand-drawn animation have responded very positively to the reveal. Mouse seems poised to help carry on the legacy of techniques that largely faded from prominence after the rise of 3D graphics and digital production methods. The game appears to merge classical style with modern rendering and physics for a unique look.

Launching in 2025

While Mouse does not yet have a specific release date, the new trailer confirms plans to launch across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms sometime in 2025. This extended development timeline makes sense for a modestly-sized indie team trying to balance artistic vision with quality gameplay.

Those eager to stay updated on Mouse and its eventual launch on Steam can visit the official site for more details as they emerge. But anyone curious to see a vintage animation style applied to mature graphic violence need only watch the newest trailer for a tantalising taste of what Fumi Games has cooking.
