- After the awards show, tensions between fans of the two games erupted online, sparking division within the gaming community.

- Viewers noted the rushed speeches of winners, prompting backlash that has raised questions about the future of The Game Awards.
The Game Awards Fallout
Yuri Lowenthal and Neil Newbon demonstrate unity amid the discourse over Spider-Man 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3 nominations at The Game Awards.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was an impressive contender in seven categories but left empty-handed, while Baldur’s Gate 3 took home six awards, including the prestigious Game of the Year accolade.
Online tensions arose between fans of the two games, with some Spider-Man players criticising Baldur’s Gate 3’s victory, sparking a weekend filled with conflict.
However, the actors from the games are now promoting a message of solidarity, urging fans to celebrate both titles rather than pitting them against each other.
Actors’ Message of Unity
The solidarity movement began when Yuri Lowenthal, known for his portrayal of Peter Parker in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, shared an image of Spider-Man alongside Astarion from Baldur’s Gate 3, featuring the caption “Spread love, not hate.”
Lowenthal emphasised his support for this message, stating, “This. So much this.”
Neil Newbon, the actor behind Astarion, echoed Lowenthal’s sentiment, referring to him as an “incredibly talented leading figure in our industry.”
This positive turn in the awards season is much needed following criticism of the show itself for not adequately showcasing game creators and actors.
Rushed Speeches and Backlash
Viewers observed that the winners, including Newbon, were rushed during their speeches, with a prompt to “please wrap it up” appearing on screen as little as 30 seconds after they received their awards.
In response to the backlash, host and producer Geoff Keighley refuted claims of cutting anyone off but acknowledged that the premature music cue to conclude speeches was an issue.
The strict time limit imposed during this year’s show, compared to previous years, has not been well-received by the community, raising the question of whether this will be addressed in future editions of The Game Awards.
