The highly-anticipated survival horror reboot game Alone in the Dark has been hit with yet another release date delay, pushing it from January 16th to March 20th, 2024. Publisher THQ Nordic announced the revised launch timeline, citing a desire to avoid an intense crunch period and holiday stress for developer Pieces Interactive.
Avoiding Crunch Over the Holidays
This marks the second delay for the Alone in the Dark reboot, which was originally slated to release in October 2023 before being pushed to January. In both cases, THQ Nordic made the call in order to prevent excessive crunch—prolonged periods of overwork—for the game’s developers at Sweden-based Pieces Interactive.
“The well-being of the teams is a top priority, and both companies want to avoid any potential crunch over the Christmas holidays,” the publisher said. “We understand that many people are eagerly awaiting the release, but your patience will be rewarded.”

Reimagining a Horror Classic
The reboot aims to re-imagine the 1992 original Alone in the Dark, widely considered a landmark that spawned the survival horror genre and inspired blockbuster franchises like Resident Evil.
Players will explore the creepy Derceto Manor as protagonists Edward Carnby (played by Stranger Things’ David Harbour) and Emily Hartwood (Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer). The story is written by Mikael Hedberg, known for his work on acclaimed horror games like Amnesia and SOMA.
The game promises to capture the tone and spirit of the horror classic while updating it for modern audiences across PC and new-gen consoles PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Collector’s Edition Announced
THQ Nordic also revealed a Collector’s Edition for Alone in the Dark back in August filled with appropriately creepy memorabilia for hardcore fans. Specific contents have not been confirmed yet besides a vintage style box.
An Eagerly Awaited Comeback
While the Resident Evil franchise has continuously pumped out sequels and remakes over the past decade, Alone in the Dark has laid dormant since a poorly received 2008 release. This reboot is viewed as a long-awaited comeback for the series that pioneered 3D survival horror in the 90s.
The repeated delays have only built more anticipation amongst core horror aficionados awaiting Alone in the Dark’s return. THQ Nordic stated the additional development time for Pieces Interactive will help ensure the game exceeds expectations.
Fans will ultimately decide if the reboot lives up to the beloved 1992 original when Alone in the Dark launches March 20, 2024 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. The extra months of polish could be the difference in making it a breakout hit rather than a disappointment.
