THQ Nordic has released a new trailer for the upcoming Alone in the Dark reboot introducing the creepy inhabitants of the core setting, Derceto Manor. Alongside glimpses of the gothic cast of characters, stars David Harbour and Jodie Comer provide insight on playing protagonists Edward Carnby and Emily Hartwood respectively.

The footage highlights the reactive nature of Derceto’s residents based on whether the player controls Edward or Emily. It encourages multiple playthroughs to witness the full scope of the nonlinear horror narrative.

Reimagined Vision of a Horror Classic

As Creative Director Mikael Hedberg reiterates, the mansion itself is integral to the DNA of Alone in the Dark. This reboot serves as a “love letter” to the original 1992 game that pioneered survival horror.

The devs have rebuilt the core setting from the ground up to recapture the foreboding atmosphere and supernatural mystery of the 90s cult classic. In revisiting Derceto Manor, the intent was to expand the scope while staying true to the series’ roots.

The southern gothic estate meshes well with Lovecraftian cosmic horror underpinnings, further emphasised by the eerie inhabitants introduced in the trailer. The setting comes to life through rich environmental details and dynamic reactions to player choices.

Play as Edward or Emily For Different Experiences

Protagonists Edward Carnby and Emily Hartwood are both playable, each providing a somewhat distinct perspective shaped by Derceto’s inhabitants. David Harbour and Jodie Comer’s star performances help realise the characters.

Harbour describes Edward Carnby as inherently curious, learning to overcome fear to uncover the manor’s dark history. Comer explains Emily has a more spiritual tie to the mansion, attempting to learn her own forgotten past. Their unique motivations inform the experiences.

The trailer emphasises replay value through the variances in cutscenes, events, and character interactions when controlling either Edward or Emily. This fosters a nonlinear, multi-faceted narrative encompassing cosmic and psychological horror themes.

Classic Horror Reimagined with Modern Touches

While recapturing the core ethos of the original, Alone in the Dark also modernises certain elements for a contemporary audience. The visual presentation and cinematography bring a fresh cinematic style while maintaining an aura of gothic dread.

Upgraded combat mechanics balance challenging survival-horror action with rich environmental storytelling. The haunting jazz-inspired score by composer Olivier Deriviere completes the ominous, dreamlike atmosphere. There’s also a collector’s edition for hardcore fans to get their hands on, with only a limited 5,000 copies being made in total.
