Epic Games Unlocking New Creation Powers in Fortnite

Video game company Epic Games has huge plans for putting more creative control in the hands of Fortnite fans and level designers. At their annual State of Unreal showcase, they revealed exciting upcoming updates to the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) toolset.

UEFN is a free PC program that lets users build brand new experiences inside the world of Fortnite using the same powerful technology that professional game developers use – the Unreal Engine 5.

Since its launch last year, over 80,000 custom UEFN islands have already been published by creators.

Taking Fortnite Creation to New Heights But Epic has much bigger ambitions for UEFN in the future. By the end of 2025, they plan to ship the first ever full season of content made entirely within the UEFN editor!

This means the traditional gaming developers will hand over level design, gameplay additions, and new features to highly skilled community creators working in UEFN.

It’s an unprecedented move that empowers fans to directly shape the future of the iconic battle royale game.

More Creation Tools on the Horizon

To support this new wave of Fortnite user-generated content, UEFN will gain several powerful new capabilities throughout 2024:

  • First-person camera controls for designing at a human scale
  • Improved creator profile pages to attract followers
  • Physics sandboxes to experiment with objects and gameplay

Additionally, UEFN creators will soon be able to populate their islands with realistic human characters using Epic’s MetaHuman technology. These digitised actors can be easily animated using new MetaHuman tools integrated into creative 2.0.

The possibilities don’t stop there! Epic also announced a partnership with the iconic LEGO brand to bring official LEGO assets, templates, and customisation options to UEFN.

Creators can craft authentic LEGO-themed gameplay experiences, structures, vehicles and more – all hosted within the Fortnite universe.

In the coming years, the title’s iconic world could be utterly transformed by the boundless imaginations of its most passionate fans and designers.

Thanks to tools like UEFN, their ideas won’t just shape custom maps and modes, they’ll soon directly influence and expand the core experience itself.

As Epic continues enhancing the creative tools capabilities while partnering with major brands, the boundaries of what’s possible in the battle royale’s ever-evolving island will only keep expanding. The game’s future seems destined to be a vast, user-generated multiverse of creative visions.
