Revisiting the Iconic Franchise’s Bloody Origins
After a few years away from the spotlight, the legendary Gears of War franchise is making an explosive return with a surprising new prequel entry titled Gears of War: E-Day.
Unveiled by Microsoft at the recent Xbox Games Showcase, E-Day promises to take fans back to the beginning – the terrifying first emergence of the subterranean Locust threat that set the iconic series’ events in motion.
While an exact release date has yet to be announced, the gripping announcement trailer instantly set the tone.
We’re shown two soldiers, recognisable as a young Marcus Fenix and his friend Dom, valiantly battling against the monstrous Locust creatures in a haunting echo of the classic “Mad World” trailer that first introduced the original title so many years ago.
An Unexpected Prequel Premise
Rather than continuing the story threads laid out in the most recent mainline entry Gears 5, The Coalition studio has opted to go back to the very beginning with E-Day.
As the name implies, this experience will depict Emergence Day itself, the catastrophic global event when the fearsome Locust Horde first burst forth from their underground tunnels to wage war on the surface-dwelling humans of Sera.
E-Day has been frequently referenced throughout the Gears canon, but never before depicted or playable in such vivid detail.
Now, players will finally bear witness to those fateful first hours as the battle-hardened soldier Marcus Fenix finds himself unexpectedly caught in the midst of this paradigm-shifting alien invasion as a young man.
By making Marcus the protagonists, E-Day is clearly positioning itself as an origin story that aims to reshape how we perceive the gruff, iconic hero fans first met in the original Gears of War trilogy developed by Epic Games.
Watching him evolve from a fresh-faced warrior into the grizzled, battle-worn veteran we all know could make for a compelling new perspective.
Of course, the bigger challenge for The Coalition may be in perfectly capturing the signature gritty look and feel that helped the Gears franchise redefine the cover shooter genre so long ago.
The chilling, atmospheric announcement trailer seemed to nail that distinct blend of sci-fi horror and bombastic action.
But how the complete experience holds up remains to be seen.
Many experts and fans in the community consider GOW Judgment to be the standout entry in the series, so it will be interesting to see how this latest instalment will be judged (no pun intended).
