Key Highlights:

  • People Can Fly joins The Coalition as co-developers of Gears of War: E-Day.
  • GOW E-Day serves as a prequel, focusing on Emergence Day and the origins of the Locust Horde.
  • The game revisits horror themes while reuniting fans with iconic characters Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago.

The highly anticipated Gears of War: E-Day now has a second major development partner. People Can Fly, a Polish studio known for its work on Gears of War: Judgment and the original trilogy, has officially joined The Coalition in bringing the prequel to life.

This collaboration marks a return to the franchise for the studio, whose CEO, Sebastian Wojciechowski, described the opportunity as both a “privilege” and a chance to rekindle the studio’s history with the series.

In a press release, People Can Fly highlighted its commitment to creating an experience that stays true to the roots of Gears of War.

Development Director Guillaume Barry added:

“We’re pouring everything into crafting a game that will exceed expectations.”

A Return to Horror: GOW E-Day’s Focus

Set 14 years before the original Gears of WarE-Day centres on the catastrophic Emergence Day when the Locust Horde first attacked Sera.

The game will revisit fan-favourite characters Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in their younger years, with their original voice actors reprising their roles.

Creative Director Matt Searcy emphasised that E-Day will dive deeper into the horror elements that defined the original trilogy. “What if the ground opened up and monsters came out?” he said in an interview, describing the emotional and visceral storytelling planned for the game.

By blending grounded human reactions with the fictional setting of Sera, E-Day aims to deliver a fresh take on the franchise’s signature themes of survival and camaraderie.

People Can Fly: A Familiar Name in Gears Lore

People Can Fly’s legacy with the Gears of War series runs deep. As the lead developer for 2013’s Gears of War: Judgment, the studio had a pivotal role in shaping the franchise’s history.

Before that, it collaborated with Epic Games on the original trilogy, cementing its expertise in crafting the visceral combat and weighty mechanics fans have come to expect.

Since then, People Can Fly has expanded its portfolio with games like Bulletstorm and Outriders, demonstrating its knack for delivering high-octane action.

The studio’s return to Gears of War with E-Day has sparked excitement, not only for its potential to recapture the franchise’s former glory but also to introduce new gameplay elements inspired by the team’s evolution over the years.

What This Means for Gears of War Fans

With People Can Fly onboard, Gears of War: E-Day is shaping up to be a nostalgic yet refreshing addition to the series. This AAA title has a decent budget behind it and gamers are expecting big things from it.

Fans have also been speculating about a potential Gears of War compilation, akin to Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which could serve as the perfect lead-up to the prequel’s launch.

While the official release date for E-Day remains unannounced, the partnership between The Coalition and People Can Fly has set high expectations. There’s been only an announcement trailer that was released at the Xbox Games Showcase back in June of last year.

As the first mainline Gears of War title since 2020’s Gears Tactics, this latest entry promises a return to the series’ core values: intense, cinematic storytelling and visceral third-person combat.

Gears of War: E-Day represents a pivotal moment for the franchise, bringing together two powerhouse studios to honour its legacy while pushing it into new territory.

GOW E-Day is shaping up to be an unmissable chapter in the Gears of War saga.
