Twitch Lifts Ban on Donald Trump

Twitch lift their ban on former President Donald Trump

Key Highlights:

  • Twitch unbans Donald Trump after 3 years, 5 months, and 4 weeks.
  • Decision comes as Trump becomes official Republican nominee for US president.
  • Twitch cites value in hearing from presidential nominees directly.

Twitch, the popular livestreaming platform, has lifted its ban on former President Donald Trump’s account after more than three years.

The decision, announced on July 19th, 2024, comes in the wake of Trump accepting the Republican nomination for the upcoming US presidential election.

Trump’s Twitch account was initially created in 2019, primarily used to stream his campaign rallies rather than for gaming content.

The account faced its first suspension in June 2020 for hateful conduct, which lasted only a couple of weeks.

However, following the January 6th, 2021 attack on the US Capitol, Twitch imposed an “indefinite” ban on Trump’s account, citing the “potential for harm to our community and the general public.”

Platform’s Stance on Political Content

A Twitch spokesperson, who requested anonymity due to safety concerns, stated:

“We believe there is value in hearing from Presidential nominees directly, when possible. Trump is now the official Republican nominee for US president.”

The platform emphasised that it will continue to enforce its Community Guidelines and take necessary action against rule violations, regardless of a channel’s owner.

The streaming platform’s decision aligns with recent moves by other social media platforms. In September last year, mod tools were added to share ban details.

Earlier this week, Meta dropped restrictions on Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, which were reinstated in January 2023.

It’s worth noting that Twitch does not have a specific “public figure policy,” meaning all channels are subject to the same guidelines.

The spokesperson clarified, “All channels are equally subject to our guidelines, regardless of whether the channel belongs to a public figure.”

As of now, Trump’s Twitch channel remains inactive, still displaying links to his 2020 campaign. He has famously not tweeted out to his 87M followers on X/Twitter since Jan 8th, 2021 as well.

It’s unclear whether the Trump campaign plans to utilise the platform for the 2024 election cycle. If they do, it’s likely to be used for streaming campaign rallies, as was the case in previous years.

The use of livestreaming platforms by politicians has become increasingly common. Other notable examples include Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez streaming “Among Us” to encourage voter turnout and Bernie Sanders hosting a Twitch livestream during the 2020 election.

As the 2024 US presidential election approaches, set for November 5th, the reinstatement of Trump’s Twitch account adds another potential avenue for campaign communication.

Though, it remains to be seen how, or if, the Trump campaign will leverage this newly restored platform in the coming months.
