Electronic Arts have finally unveiled the 17th expansion for The Sims 4 entitled “Life & Death”, launching this Halloween. A new a three-minute trailer has been released by EA which you can view below:
Details on the new expansion were also shared via the official website and we are going to cover everything that’s new here as well.
This ambitious update promises to blur the lines between the living and the departed, offering players an unprecedented exploration of the afterlife within the beloved life simulation game.
The expansion introduces the haunting realm of Ravenwood, comprising three distinct neighbourhoods: Crow’s Crossing, Whispering Glen, and Mourningvale. Each area boasts its own unique features and eerie atmosphere:
- Crow’s Crossing: An eerie village with cobbled roads, local grave makers, and a Mysterious Merchant selling curios. Players can participate in the Try Before You Die Casket Sale or attend the Ravenwood Family Day.
- Whispering Glen: Features rolling hills and an idyllic countryside steeped in ruins and rumours. Sims can explore a local Crypt, investigate the Tarot Tome Shrine, or join the nightly Moon Revelry festival.
- Mourningvale: Home to many Ghosts and occasionally visited by the Grim Reaper. Sims can experience an out-of-body experience in the Baleful Bog or attend Afterlife Anonymous meetups.
Ghost Sims and Death-Themed Careers
A major highlight is the ability to play as Ghost Sims, complete with customisable appearances and a progression system for spectral powers. These ethereal beings can interact with the living, earning Fear or Goodwill essences to make Simoleons in the afterlife.
It’s clear that these essences will serve as a new currency, driving the economy of the afterlife and introducing new strategies for making a living – or, in this case, an afterliving.
Ghost Sims can even enjoy spectral Woohoo inside various objects, adding a supernatural twist to romance.
The expansion introduces two new death-themed careers:
Reaper
Sims start as Grimterns at the Netherworld Department of Death (N.W.D.D.), working their way up to full-fledged Reaper. They’ll practice reaping souls, determine causes of death, and even decide which souls to reap or return to life.
Undertaker
This classic career involves grave digging, embalming, and ensuring peaceful transitions for the departed.
Life fulfilment takes centre stage with the new Soul’s Journey system, which combines Aspirations and Wants. Players can create Bucket Lists for their Sims, offering powerful rewards upon completion, including the possibility of Rebirth with special traits like Burning Soul. This system allows Sims to unlock past skills and traits from previous lives.
The expansion also delves into the emotional impact of loss, introducing four Grief Types:
- Denial
- Holding It Together
- Anger
- Blues
These grief types are triggered by various life events, including death, divorce, or job loss. Sims can cope by attending grief counseling or engaging in creative activities.
This deepens the emotional and psychological elements of the game, giving players more tools to simulate realistic emotional responses.
Funerals become a customisable event, where players can:
- Choose attendees and the deceased
- Select a dress code and colour theme
- Pick from 14 different activities, such as giving eulogies or planting memorial trees
New gameplay mechanics include:
- Drafting wills to bequeath possessions and set funeral requests
- Unlocking the Ghost Historian Aspiration
- Three new traits: Macabre, Chased by Death, and Skeptic
- Thanatology Skill for studying death
- New death type: Death by Murder of Crows
The Life & Death expansion pack is available for pre-order now, with a release date set for October 31st 2024. Early purchasers (before 12 December) will receive bonus items including the Lasting Legacy Family Portrait, Mournful Melodies Music Box, and Plumed Elegance Mask.
The developers have assured fans that well over 15 major content updates will be heading their way over the next year or so.
As The Sims 4 approaches its two-year anniversary since becoming a full free-to-play model, this expansion marks a significant step into unexplored territory.
By intertwining themes of life, death, and the supernatural, EA is offering players a chance to explore the full spectrum of Sim existence. The timing of this release, coinciding with Halloween, showcases EA’s strategic approach to seasonal content.
This ghostly update not only adds depth to the game’s life simulation aspects but also taps into the popular fascination with the supernatural and afterlife.
Will this expansion breathe new life into the game or will it be a grave mistake? Only time will tell, but one thing’s certain: come Halloween, Sims players will have a whole new world – or rather, afterworld – to explore.
