In a monumental shift for the Halo franchise, 343 Industries has unveiled its transformation into Halo Studios. This rebrand marks the beginning of a new chapter for the iconic series, bringing with it significant changes in both technology and development philosophy.

A Fresh Start with Unreal Engine 5

The newly christened Halo Studios has confirmed that future Halo projects will be developed using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5, moving away from the proprietary Slipspace Engine.

This transition aims to address longstanding development challenges and accelerate content creation.

A fresh video was uploaded to YouTube entitled “A New Dawn” which you can view above.

Art director Chris Matthews stated in a recent interview with Xbox Wire that some components of Slipspace are almost 25 years old and basically need updating.

To showcase the potential of this engine change, Halo Studios presented Project Foundry, a tech demo demonstrating what a Halo game could look like in Unreal Engine 5.

While not representative of an actual game in development, it offers fans a glimpse into the future visual fidelity of the franchise.

UE5 has already been adopted by other major studios, such as CD Projekt Red for the next Witcher games, and Titan Forge with Smite 2. It is regarded as an industry standard for AAA game development.

Multiple Projects in the Pipeline

Studio Head Pierre Hintze has confirmed that multiple Halo projects are currently in development. While specific details remain under wraps for now, this announcement suggests a diverse range of experiences may be in store for the fan-base.

Hintze also hinted at changes to the studio’s culture and workflow, including earlier community involvement in the development process.

A noticeable shift from previous Halo titles, where community feedback largely came after significant milestones or launches, Halo Infinite faced delays and controversies partly due to late-stage feedback.

This approach aims to foster a stronger connection between the developers and the Halo community, potentially leading to titles that better align with fan expectations.

Early engagement with fans has become a rising trend in game development, with companies like Bungie (creators of Destiny) and Epic Games (Fortnite) frequently involving their communities in feedback loops.

Addressing Past Challenges

The decision to rebrand and switch engines comes in the wake of Halo Infinite’s tumultuous development and launch.

While the game’s single-player campaign was generally well-received, issues with multiplayer, content pacing, and monetisation led to fan frustration.

343 faced considerable backlash over the delayed release of key features like Forge and campaign co-op, which weren’t available at launch.

By adopting Unreal Engine 5, Halo Studios hopes to alleviate many of the technical hurdles that slowed down Halo Infinite’s development and post-launch support.

The more widely used engine should also help the studio attract and onboard talent more efficiently, potentially leading to faster development cycles and more consistent content delivery.

By contrast, the Slipspace Engine required specialised knowledge, making it harder to scale teams quickly.

As the newly named Halo Studios embarks on this new journey, the future of the franchise seems brighter than ever. The combination of a fresh studio identity, cutting-edge technology, and a renewed focus on community engagement signals a potential renaissance for the long-running series.
