Key Highlights:

  • DayZ’s Frostline DLC introduces new Sakhal map.
  • Update 1.26 brings significant gameplay changes.
  • New features include rubber boats and improved fishing mechanics.

Bohemia Interactive has launched the highly anticipated Frostline DLC for DayZ, alongside a substantial update (version 1.26) that introduces sweeping changes to the survival game.

This expansion pack and update combo significantly enhances the game’s core survival mechanics and introduces new challenges for players.

The centrepiece of the Frostline DLC is the new Sakhal map, a volcanic island chain that pushes survival to the extreme with its sub-zero temperatures. Players must contend with:

  • Freezing conditions that rarely rise above 0°C
  • Limited food supplies, often requiring thawing before consumption
  • New wildlife, including reindeer and arctic fish species

In particular, the limited food supplies will be extremely testing for some newcomers to the game. Veterans will find ways round this, having played on the main map for a few years now.

A key addition to all DayZ maps is the introduction of rubber boats, allowing players to navigate water bodies more efficiently. This new transportation option opens up fresh tactical possibilities for exploration and escape.

Update 1.26 brings numerous gameplay adjustments aimed at enhancing realism and challenge:

  1. Inventory Management: Reduced carrying capacity in clothing items, forcing more strategic looting decisions
  2. Fishing and Hunting: Overhauled systems for a more engaging food-gathering experience
  3. Temperature Simulation: More realistic item temperature mechanics
  4. Server Browser: Improved functionality for easier server selection

The update also introduces several new items and features:

  • Winter-themed infected types
  • New clothing options (e.g., Budenovka, ski gloves, down jacket)
  • Ice axe for traversing icy terrain
  • Heavy metal poisoning as a new environmental hazard

Bohemia Interactive has implemented a regional loot economy system, tailoring gear and resources to each map’s specific environment. This change aims to create more diverse and location-appropriate survival experiences across different terrains.

Other notable improvements include:

  • Enhanced animal AI with the addition of brown hares and red foxes
  • New craftable items like wooden fishing hooks and wolf trophy headdresses
  • Improved weather effects, including grass bending under characters and infected

While the update brings numerous positive changes, some known issues persist, including potential server browser display problems and weather desynchronisation. Bohemia Interactive has acknowledged these issues and is working on fixes.
