Ghost of Yōtei Release Date Trailer
The newly released trailer, titled “The Onryō’s List” dives deeper into the emotional and violent revenge tale of Atsu, the game’s lead protagonist, and her pursuit of justice against a fearsome group known as the Yōtei Six.
Atsu’s narrative doesn’t just echo the samurai revenge arc, it refines it.
The main core of this game is revenge, but its true promise lies in how deeply personal the motivation is.
Atsu isn’t reclaiming honour or territory, she’s reclaiming identity. The trailer confirms that her family is murdered by a masked group, each referred to by their animalistic moniker:
- The Snake
- The Oni
- The Kitsune
- The Spider
- The Dragon
- Lord Seito (the only one named rather than masked)
Pinned to a burning ginkgo tree and left to die by Seito himself, Atsu survives, returns, and reclaims her blade, now using it as the symbol of her defiance.
The voiceover refers to her as “Situreinu”, one who is lost in the hunt.
This signals internal conflict, elevating the story’s emotional stakes. The lead protagonist isn’t just fighting enemies, she’s fighting herself.
Despite obvious surface-level similarities – samurai, vengeance, open world, Ghost of Yōtei is designed to stand on its own.
Sucker Punch has clarified that while the worlds of Jin Sakai and Atsu are unrelated, both protagonists wrestle with legacy in different ways.
Noteworthy distinctions:
- Narrative structure: Yōtei leans into a personal vendetta rather than a broader historical war.
- Villain identity system: Each enemy in the Yōtei Six wears a symbolic mask tied to their persona, creating a more stylised nemesis list than Tsushima’s Mongol invasion.
- Open-world design: Developers have promised to move away from Tsushima’s repetitive world tasks by introducing handcrafted side quests, dynamic NPC reactions, and environmental storytelling via shrines and ruins.

With Ghost of Yōtei, Sucker Punch isn’t just repeating a successful formula, they’re evolving it.
By shifting the focus to a more personal, psychological tale and introducing new enemy archetypes, the studio aims to provide a sharper, more stylised experience.
If Ghost of Tsushima was about honour and legacy, Ghost of Yōtei is about identity and consequence.
And when Atsu finally meets Seito again, with the same sword he once used to end her life, you’ll know the hunt was never just about vengeance. It was about becoming.
