Key Highlights:

  • GTA 6 officially delayed to 26th May 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
  • Rockstar cites quality standards and fan expectations as the reason.
  • No new trailer or gameplay updates yet, but more info is expected soon.

Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will not be launching in 2025 as originally planned.

Instead, the studio is now targeting a 26th May 2026 release date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

The announcement, issued through Rockstar’s social media channels, expresses regret for the delay but emphasises the developer’s aim to exceed expectations.

“We want to thank you for your support and your patience”

This marks the latest shift in the timeline for one of the most anticipated games of the decade.

Rockstar had previously said the game would arrive in 2025, a window that persisted publicly until today’s confirmation.

While Rockstar hasn’t offered detailed insight into the delay’s specific cause, the messaging is consistent with the studio’s track record: polish and perfection over rushed releases.

Internal development appears to be progressing, but clearly not at the pace initially intended.

The studio’s most recent AAA title, Red Dead Redemption 2, also saw multiple delays before launching to critical acclaim in 2018.

Like that game, GTA 6 is aiming for an experience that goes beyond what fans have seen before, something Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive, has reiterated in recent CNBC interviews and earnings calls.

Since the reveal trailer dropped in December 2023, instantly breaking viewership records which as of this writing stands at 251M on YouTube, concrete details have been limited.

Here’s a quick summary of what’s confirmed:

  • Setting: Modern-day Vice City, Rockstar’s fictional take on Miami.
  • Protagonists: A Bonnie and Clyde-inspired duo.
  • Platforms: PS5 and Xbox Series X/S confirmed; no word on a PC version yet.
  • Development: First announced as “well underway” in 2022, though the game has reportedly been scaled back early on to ensure smoother post-launch expansion.

Despite limited reveals, GTA 6 continues to dominate industry chatter and social media speculation.

The delay has a ripple effect across the gaming calendar.

Publishers previously reluctant to release titles in late 2025 due to GTA 6’s looming presence may now adjust their strategies.

EA has already hinted at potentially moving Battlefield’s next instalment to avoid crowded windows, and Sony likely scheduled Ghost of Yōtei for October 2025 with knowledge of Rockstar’s shift.

Take-Two’s upcoming financial report, expected on 15th May, will likely shed more light on the company’s projections post-delay. Until then, the only official roadmap is May 2026.

With the bar set sky-high following GTA 5’s continued dominance and Red Dead Redemption 2’s narrative excellence, expectations for GTA VI are monumental.

No new trailer or gameplay footage accompanied the delay announcement, but given Rockstar’s penchant for controlled marketing rollouts, further updates will likely arrive closer to the newly revealed launch window.
